Magnet fell off

omg today my sub wouldn't play so when i took it out of the box i noticed that the magnet fell off. its an RE SE 15" IS IT DOOMED? or can it be fixed?

kevmurray 02-27-2010 05:31 PM

DeadlySones 02-27-2010 05:32 PM

Well, you'll have to get to the screws that hold the basket to the magnet. Usually they're under the spider. Sounds like you'll need to recone it, as I don't know of a way to remove the cone assembly without damaging it. GL

Spawn-Inc 02-27-2010 09:00 PM

here is another picture, the one posted before.

http://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/...Picture010.jpg

looks like 6 bolts got sheared right off.

eldico 02-27-2010 09:03 PM

so can i just like jam them back together? or is it pooched?

eldico 02-27-2010 09:10 PM

there was no bolts just tape over the holes.

Spawn-Inc 02-27-2010 09:50 PM

i would clean the surfaces off and get some jb weld and make sure you line it up as bast you can so the cone/coil can move freely.

eldico 02-27-2010 10:03 PM

yea i would do that but when i try puting them together like the cone wont move very easily

There are 6 possible positions for the magnet to sit.....at one of them the different hole depths and the sheared off metal will line up correctly, or at least a lot better than the other 5. Thats the point where you can try sticking it back onto the frame. The magnet must clear the coil all the way around or she's pooched anyways, so you might as well try.....:dunno:

HTH

Mat-Romain 02-28-2010 02:09 AM

yea, looks like the top plate came off of the magnet pack...IMO, Pooched....lining that back up will be NEARLY impossible to get perfect....i guess its better than the bottom plate and pole piece commin out tho.

u may be able to fix it, but thats pretty messed up...gl man

eldico 02-28-2010 08:37 AM

IDK man i tried putting them back together by linning up the tape marks on the magnet with the tape marks on the other thing and still did the same rough moving thing. Do you think that a repair shop would be able to fix it? Know of any close by?

Haunz 02-28-2010 09:30 AM

This seems all to common.. RE's quality really went to since they were bought by US Amps..

^ this is exactly what happened.. it's repairable, but even then it will still need a recone..

Probably be cheaper for you to buy another sub..

AAAAAAA 02-28-2010 09:39 AM

That's a pretty cool way for a subwoofer to go out. Very unusual. Sorry for your bad news.

Menace 02-28-2010 09:51 AM

Now my question is did u buy this sub new or used. if Used .. someone made the sub up from diff parts and over torqued the bots. Simile as that.. Or the sub was dropped. best bet is to tapp out the bots from the magnet and recone the sub. one the other hand from that it is toast. sorry bud

^ when did they get bought out because I thought my sub was older then that.

Haunz 02-28-2010 01:15 PM

Everything 2006 and up is the new RE...

If it's a 2005 or older then it's the old RE...

Either way, the epoxy on the topplate let go.. which happens sometimes..

Weman 02-28-2010 02:58 PM

That's blows dude , way to go out in style tho.

eldico 02-28-2010 04:50 PM

Well i guess im in the market for a new 15. you guys think i could get anything for that sub on ebay? and any suggestions for a new sub?

Haunz 02-28-2010 06:48 PM

Check out Mach 5 audio..

PsychoAcoustics Canada 02-28-2010 07:19 PM

look at tf one. some of the best subs available from a canadian legend

eldico 02-28-2010 07:54 PM

how can i look them up when all i get when i google it is that random other thread??

DeadlySones 02-28-2010 08:19 PM

I hear they are still working on their website. Send Father Yuli a PM. He might be able to help you out. ;)

kevmurray 02-28-2010 08:34 PM

That is weird, the magnet should suck itself onto that top plate and hang on for dear life. The epoxy is mostly to keep things from sliding and putting the pole piece out of alignment. Those six bolt looking things are where the basket casting pokes through holes in the top plate and is staked to lock it in. Kinda like a cast-in rivet.

I would say the best idea is the JB Weld. Practice aligning it a few times and when you find a position that doesn't run interference with the voice coil mark it up with a scriber. Then use the JB Weld to make it permanent. This will take some thought to come up with a process that will work. Good luck.:)

Jaloosk 03-01-2010 10:22 AM

There's a used 15" TF1 in the marketplace...just sayin...

Father Yuli 03-01-2010 11:44 AM

sometimes this happens. i seen this before a few times.

eldico 03-01-2010 11:54 AM

i was also looking on the fi website and im pretty sure they do sell a recone kit for that sub but i still have no idea if that would fix my problem.

CoreyC 03-01-2010 02:49 PM

That happened all the time with those bassworx 12.4 subs.

Fi parts would work in that sub but you still need to get the top plate glued back on to the magnets.
