So yeah, that's my update. Well it actually was done yesterday, but I didn't get a chance to update it here.

Alright, as a rule of thumb... How should my amp be set?

Shoud there be any bass boost at all? How far should the gain be? (no less than or no more than, etc.) Subsonic Filter? Etc. etc. etc.

The amp is a DPX1800.

What about covering one of the ports?

GAINS

First, and most importantly, you can't trust people who say "don't put the gain past 1/2, 3/4" because the gain only changes the input voltage and needs to be different depending on the speaker's impedance.

Grab a 25Hz sine wave recorded at 0 deciBels.
Realm of Excursion (downloads section)

Take your MultiMeter, disconnect the speaker and attach the DMM to the +- of the channel you're tuning.

Adjust the gain until it says 28.2
square root(RMSWatts*Impedance)
sqrt(800*1) = 28.28

So just don't go past that and your gain will be fine.

BASS BOOST

If you NEED to use bass boost. Set that before you set your gains.

I know on your amp you get to select the frequency you want to boost, and the level of boost.
So, choose the frequency you want to boost, and how much boost you want to use (Listen to it on low volume to find out what you need)

Once you've got the level set, make sure you know exactly what frequency it's boosting. Then go grab a sine wave from RealmOfExcursion again and play that in your CD player (75%) volume, and tune the gains the way I explained above.

NOTE
If you don't know what frequency it's set at, try to ballpark it. If you THINK it's about 30Hz, go back to RealmOfExcursion and put a 30Hz tone on a CD, put it in the stereo and turn the volume to 75%

Leave the sub unplugged and put the DMM on the +- like you're setting the gains. Move the boosted frequency screw until you see the highest voltage on the DMM. (If you're under or over 30Hz, then the voltage will be lower)

Then set your gains. WITH THE 30HZ SINE WAVE (or whatever Hz you choose)

SUBSONIC

The subSonic filter is completely safe to play with, it doesn't boost anything so it can't cause damage. I'd set it to about 7 to 14Hz. It just cuts off everything that can't be heard by the human ear and uses the voltage above that for the audible frequencies. It really just saves power.

I'd leave the bass boost alone. But hey that's just me.
The subsonic needs to be set about 5-10hz(might be slightly more, correct me if i'm wrong) below your porting frequency.
If you really mean setting it to 14hz and his box is tuned at around mid 30ish, that might hit him on the head one day, woudn't it?

Well, to be honest. I couldn't actually remember what range you're supposed to use, but those were the numbers that seemed right. Even though I guess you can hear frequencies lower than that.

And about the box, right now it's tuned to 70!!!! :stroke:

Yea that's what I thought, 1.5 box with 3" round port (if I understand correctly). ehehe, the port would need to be really long fior "normal" tuning.

Nope its a 1.5 cube box that NOW has TWO 4inch ports! It's tuned to about 70hz :sly: ... Those $!#@%ers... :bs:

lol, Today when I was on my break at work and went out and re-set my amp, turned the bass boost right off and turned down the gain and adj. the subsonic, etc. a bit. Not going to do too much right now as there is no point.

Woah, I just looked up your sub. It's only rated at 500W.

Even though other people are running more power, if you don't have access to an oscilloscope or RTA I'd highly recommend NOT going past the rated wattage.


New voltage should be 22.3V

It shouldn't really be that much worse for it, if it is clean power. :dunno:
