McIntosh MX-406
has anyone used this unit? and how much is a used one worth!!! im thinking of picking one up for $400.
Can you use the mx-406 as a standalone headunit? or do you have to use an external d/a converter like with some of their other headunits?
i was gonna pick up a DRZ-9255 for around the same, but money got delayed and someone scooped it up:P lol
..i think i may like the mac more though. it doesn't have the processing power as the clarion, but i don't compete or anything and it is seeexy.

I own one and like it, it is fine as long as you want ZERO processing, the tone control is very marginal. No internal amp, no D/A needed. Sound is warm and rich (not flat like the clarion or eclispe). The unit is a simplified Clarion drx9255. at 400 a steal but used is always a crap shoot.

ya used i am taking a chance, but i don't have the cash for new:P i don't do any competitions or anything, and i HATE these decks that have all ipod, bluetooth, etc and all kinds of features you don't need. I love simplicity.
the deck is was purchased 4 years ago and hasn't been in use in 2 1/2. so there isn't a ton of use on the unit.
JohnVroom, do you ever have issues playing CDR's on your unit?

well i got and installed my MX-406 today, mint condition, barely any use during its life, sounds great! it was a pain to install, the faceplate on these decks is huge.
first impressions, the bass is VERY tight compared to my last couple of decks (DVA-9965, and CD8061)...despite the fact that there is no dedicated sub preout, you have to use a pass through on an amp.
the vocals are warm, and sound very natural....doesn't sound near as digital as my alpine.
the highs i need to fine tune...so far i find them to be a little hollow and crisp. which is surprising because i have always found my MLK-165s very natural sounding.
overall it is a beautiful deck with stellar sound quality....and i LOVE the simplicity!

well i have the auxillary if i want to use my mp3 player and get rid of my cd's. but even lossless music still doesn't sound quite the same as the real thing.
and simplicity i mean flashing screens, sat radio, bluetooth, etc. if the function alters the pure signal in any way from how it is meant to sound, it isn't included.
lol, and it may just be me but i love inserting cd's into this thing....it grabs them so cleanly and smoothly, you can't feel it at all.

with average recordings current USB drives do an OK job. The future of audio is probably in hard drives and flash drives. lots of electro-mechanical advantages (no laser to wear out or get dirty, no moving parts, no more skipping (take note SPLers), no scratches, more compact, mature technology, physically robust).
I am not sure the media SOURCES are good enough to supply true full bandwidth sound at this time.

ya i would agree with that. but the quality of the flash/hard drive is irrelevant is people don't actually play decent source material through it. 99% of the people out there are listening to downloaded songs at 128kbps.
JohnVroom, is there a clock on the MX-406 anywhere? i can't seem to find one.
