i know this is a pretty broad question but i was just wondering which would be better to run 2 12 inch subs, a monoblock amp or a 2 channel amp producing the same wattage, and why would it be better, thanks

If you want to run the subwoofers in stereo, you require a two-channel amp. If you want mono subwoofers, then a mono amp is fine.
The other thing to consider would be that Class-D amplifiers are much more common in mono amps. The reason being is that they are generally more efficient & the greater distortion created is not heard by our ears as much in the lower bass region.
The choice is yours!

i run a 12 mtx black gold off a 2 channel eclipse 33230. its sounds alright, good for sq, but 2 channel amps don`t have the power to drive subs unless they are really big. class d mono`s are the way to go, but they are a little pricy.

oh yeah something else, having a two channel can give you the best of both worlds, but having a mono amp is only good for mono applications.

d class mono blocks are the way to go in terms of efficiency, size and watts per dollar. One of my favourite class d amps is the pioneer gmd-510m. It is IMO a great value at 300-350 brand new for a 500-600 watts rms amp in a tiny package. The sound quality is very good and reliability excellent as far as I'm concerned.

The theory is you will get more control over your subs with a Class A/B (2 channel). So if you're looking for SQ, then I would suggest a Class A/B over a Class D.

I would suggest at eD NIne.1

http://www.edesignaudio.com

300$ US shipped. It's underrated at 1200W @ 1ohm. 3 year warranty and a great brand all around.
