Ive got a problem with my 12" MTX 8000 aluminum cone subs. Im not sure if they are overheating or not or whats goin on but a few weeks ago one started to make a popping noise, so i threw last years model in and the other one just went a few weeks later. Both times it happened after they were running for about 20mins straight. Im running a jbl 1200.1 to them in a sealed box that has a bit more then 2 inches from the bottom of the sub to the box for cooling purposes.

Also someone told me these subs are rebuildable? any truth to this? I would just like to try to find out whats causing this before i start throwing money i dont have at it.

Thanks,
Ryan

could be the dust caps...that was the greatest problem i've seen with the MTX 6000/8000 series subs....

I was thinking that also, is there anyway to check?? How would I go about putting them on?? Is there special glue? I think this might be the problem, because the subs still move perfect and sound good but make that strange noise and they dont smell burnt.

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan, i think its your Rims and Tires that are causing the problem, you better give them to me

anyways they sounded okay when we had it booming last week, you didnt mention this when we were playing with it. im wondering if you have the subs wired correctly to the amp. i know that JBL allows for multiple subs to be hooked up without bridging on that amp, but im wondering if you have the coils on the subs wired wrong or something. just a thought.

A 1200.1 is a little much for those subs, IMO... The 8000 series struggle with anything over 400 RMS, even with their fancy ventig techniques, so 600+ could be a problem for them.

Thanks for the reply Ex-Maxx. What would be some good subs to run with that amp? and at what impedance.

Thanks

what is the volume of that box that the MTX's are in Ryan and how deep also. then we can figure out what subs are better. in the mean time turn the gain down on your amp a bit.

the volume of the sealed box is 1.25cu ft per sub. And the mounting depth is 2 inchs deeper then the sub which would make it around 7 5/8s around there.
