here is my amp:
http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/archive/pro400x5.cfm

I have two Jl 10w0-4s which are 125W.

Is my amp giving these subs enough power to make them perform at peak? Could I get more volume out of them with more clean power?

Will this amp sufficiently power an average component set, and my two subs?

thanks

I don't necassarily understand the obscure ratings on that amp but you could probably give the subs a little more then that.... Ive known a few people with the same subs and a solid 500wRMS/pair with no problems...

(just don't blame me if you blow them now that I've said that)

It took one buddy at least 2weeks of pounding a pair of 15" WOs with a 1000wRMS fusion amp before he blew them....

Edit: Id actually recommend going with larger subs if you have the air space btw...

You would get more out of them with a proper box, the sub channel is more than ample power to make the subs perform reasonably well. As far as the front and rear goes, my personal opinion is that it is a little weak, especially if you are listening to your music more often than not. It is however a good match of power between the front / rear and sub section and will perform good.

A larger amp on the sub section will yield more power but will the subs take it over a length of time is the question. Overall it is an alright match.

The amp is a fine match. The W0's are quite efficient in JL's recommended ported enclosure size (1.0net per I believe). In this enclosure they don't require more than rated power to perform as designed. Your sub channel is actually a bit underrated and will easily do rated power to the pair of W0's.

If you wish to run a comp set also then you can bridge the front and rear channels turning the amp into a 3ch and give each comp channel 100rms+ which is sufficient for many nice 2-way driver sets.

Enjoy your amp and your future setup.

^^ What Hardwrkr said exactly. I think the MTX amps make something between their RMS and Dynamic rated power, usually.

I mean err, that amp is definitely underpowering them, give you $50 for it....

No Im appy with it! glad you sold it to me.

I just heard a friends system with one 10 in a cherokee with a 500W amp and a ported box and it sounded almost louder then mine does.

I guess since I have the space I should get a ported box and see how that fairs.

hardwrkr, thanks for the tip on bridging the front/rear channels. That will deffinitely work for me as I a sub/component set will be all I have.

That answers my question and makes me feel better too

PS: When I get a new deck with sub control, does that control my gain on the amp?? Or does it just control volume on the subs RCA's?

Going ported will definitely make a difference. The sub level control adjusts the strength of the signal coming out of the RCA's I believe.

Cool. Should I just build the box to the specs the manual says?

If the manual gives port size for one speaker and says to do that x2 for two subs, cant I just have ONE port that is larger or something?

Whats up with the knew boxes I see at stores which have slots instead of a round tube port?

What do you commonly use for ports (im talking material)?
