A side note if anyone knows how to mod a computer power supple to get more amps of it because I only am running off of 9 amp and when I turn it up the lights on the deck blink with the bass and I think my Pre ampoutput isn't working on it how would I find out???

you have the oddest shaped speakers ive ever seen.

SwantonRX-7 03-09-2004 08:33 AM

well they are pioneers

SwantonRX-7 03-09-2004 08:36 AM

This is what my system was before I installed the deck

a new computer power supply is under $100, and it'll put out lots more power than an old one. just hook them in paralell

SwantonRX-7 03-09-2004 09:11 AM

Not really the new one only does 12 amps and mine does 9 thats not much difference

bing 03-09-2004 12:26 PM

is that supply even big enough???

i am going ot be doing this with a few extra things i have.

i did it before but the power supply went into clip all the time.

what i am doing is taking the subwoofer pre-out on my receiver and splitting it into right / left pre-outs.

running these through a powered PLD-1 line driver and into a huge 2 channel car amp then into a pair of PPI flat piston 10's in individual boxes located at the corners of my room.

i did it with two other subs and it was SICK, at minimum volume.. any more and it cut out.

i ordered a big fat pyramid power supply (i know pyramid..blah, but power is power) so that i can run it at decent volumes. it has adjustable voltage so i can play with that as well..

formulator 03-09-2004 01:39 PM

Get a proper 12v supply, a PC supply won't cut it.

bing 03-09-2004 01:46 PM

agreed?

but then i dont see any subs there, just a pair of 6 x 9's and 5.25's off a deck... maybe the comp supply will do for that.

bigb7000 03-09-2004 02:11 PM

Well, my new computer power supply puts out 33amps on the 12volt side..

Bigmike216 03-09-2004 05:59 PM

a pc supply will cut it.. you need put a full load on the 5v line.. the current on the 12v line is proportional to the current on the 5v line. You can run multiple in parallel.. i'm running 8 in parallel to get 160 amps

loudsubz 03-09-2004 06:40 PM

PS are cheap.. I picked up a 350 watt for $24 brand new.

SwantonRX-7 03-09-2004 08:09 PM

where, around here they are looking 79.99 for a 400 watt ps

Im not sure if he got it? :D

SwantonRX-7 03-09-2004 08:28 PM

I just looked at them now and got it

bing 03-09-2004 08:32 PM

hold up...

i dont know jack about computer parts, and i have never played with the power supply from one.

are you saying you can use a couple power supplies from a computer to run a set of subs? and it wont clip?

lets say i am running a PLD-1 and about 150 wrms x 2 out of a Rodek...

as mentioned above i am thinking of using a pyramid regulated supply. 25 amps i believe. i use it to test audio at work. under $150 i get it for i think.

but i can get power supplies for nothing i think. my dad has a mcintosh graveyard somewhere.

I've often wondered how well that would work... cause i have probably 15 power supplies out of old comps sitting around and i've thought about running them in parallel and using them as a power supply for a car amp... never tested it though

Bigmike216 03-10-2004 12:17 AM

i've got them all mounted in a rack mount case that i made.. i can get pics in a couple of days if you guys would like.

Big Tom 03-10-2004 08:59 AM

I would like to see some pic's of your setup.

Have you actually tried it out to see how well it work? ie have you hooked up a fairly decent sized car amp and powered it without any problems?

I got it, I think he still did not get it!

SwantonRX-7 03-10-2004 12:13 PM

Oh but I do I just didn't have my mind in the gutter

Orion_95 03-10-2004 12:25 PM

huh? Now I know you DEFENETLY dont get it. Id have to say you DO have your mind in the gutter, cause i have no clue whats dirty about what I said.

bing 03-10-2004 01:33 PM

quick question:

would computer power supplies be superior to this:

http://www.pyramidcaraudio.com/itemp...p?model=PS26KX

i realize that is is pyramid, but it isnt a car amp. just a regulated power supply.

any other suggestions? i can get these brand new for a decent price... sub $150 w/ full warranty and stuff.

bing 03-10-2004 01:34 PM

BTW.

was the "weird shaped speakers" simply because 6 x 9's are ass? or was it something else?

abnormal72 03-10-2004 01:39 PM

The wierd shaped speakers

are referring to the shape of your cutouts

Dereck Waller 03-10-2004 02:51 PM

You had to go and spoil the mystery!

He must have used a table knife to cut those holes.

Or a jigsaw with a mind of its own :D

Orion_95 03-10-2004 03:47 PM

HAHAHA YOU WRECKED IT!

abnormal72 03-10-2004 03:52 PM

I couldnt help myself..But at least the holes look like a match.

Tim Baillie. 03-10-2004 05:13 PM

Are those for those new kick ass 12 sided oblong speakers ??

ChizzerZ24 03-10-2004 06:09 PM

I've tried using power supplies from pc but never thought of wiring them together wouldnt that force a current into each other or short something out? I just used a nice battery charger with 12amps seemed to have worked just fine power the sub amp no prob at all.

Derek Jerome 03-10-2004 06:12 PM

ok I got a question .......... why is it most of you seem to think a 90 alternator just won't cut it in your car but then you seem to think a 15 amp powersupply will do it in the home .........

just a question .........

just a question .........

hahaha, good point.. well, you could always strap an alternator to the side of that home box, attach some bike pedals, and voila... people power

ChizzerZ24 03-10-2004 09:06 PM

Good way to exercise you want music, ur ass better start bikin

Orion_95 03-10-2004 09:25 PM

It would be a mean ride, if you were running some decent power.

cavity 03-10-2004 11:24 PM

an old battery and a charger running all the time should work, al long as you dont listen to it for too long at a time

Blinddemonz 03-10-2004 11:38 PM

dude thatz a nice setup, I got a crap load of PS's at home in my dads shop im sure if u wanted I could get u some prices on them I dont think they are expensive to be honest lol

i get em for free from work all the time

SwantonRX-7 03-11-2004 08:21 AM

My 6x9 boxes were bought from future shop and the other speaker I used a jigsaw and if you look at the 5.25" and you might see something (breasts) and I think my pre amp outputs are dead on my deck because I can't get some sound from my amp because I know it powers up but no music comes out.
