Need Equalizer/Amp Help
Hey guys,
I have an 89 Nissan 240SX with a fairly old audio setup. I have a Pioneer KEXM800 tape deck, which I will probably keep, seeing as the sound is great. But I also have what looks like an equalizer, which I want to replace. I need some help identifying exactly what it is. I don't know the company, as I can't make out the logo, but it says its a "Computerized High Power Equalizer Amplifier". model is EA6470. googled it to no avail.
So from what I can discern, this is an amp and an equalizer built into one unit that fits in the dash. Basically what I'm looking for is a 1 DIN amp with equalizer(electronic screen, not ***** or sliders). Do these exist anymore?
Thanks,
240SX

Can you post a pic??
I think I still have one of those units made by "Craig" in the garage somewhere....I haven't seen one for years either....
For what it would cost to replace it these days, you could probably by a nice new deck that would do a lot more for you......

Heres a pic of what I have right now. As I said previously, I'll probably keep the Pioneer deck. My dad (previous owner) said it was quite expensive. The top thing is what I'm looking to update. I think the logo says MEI, am I correct? My dad says he got it for quite cheap.
So, if I understand this correctly this MEI thing is an equalizer/digital sound processor and an amp together in one unit?

MEI was making those before digital even made it out of the labs......
That looks like one of the 5band graphic EQs with a built-in 25w/ch amp.....sorry, no T/A.....back in the day they were a cheap way to add a little more power to a factory system.....speaker level inputs and outputs meant the SQ wasn't the greatest but it would definitely go louder......
If your Dad loves the deck so much sell it back to him....with the MEI.....use the $$ to get a new(er) deck that will do more for you......
My $.02 worth......

A new deck will have more and cleaner power than you can get out of that set....never mind all the newer processing functions and being able to play CDs....some folks use something called an MP3 on CDs now.......apparently it means you can store more music on one CD than a dozen cassette tapes...who knew?....
Nice antiques, probably worth something to a collector but that's about it.....

I wasn't planning on using cassettes
Thanks for the advice, the sarcasm, however, I can do without lmao
Any certain things to look for in a new deck or any recommendations. Car audio is not my bag so I'm trying to pick up what I can.

Well.....I've been a big fan of Kenwood Excelon decks for years.....I use mine many hours per day and they hold up very well......lots of built-in toys to play with and good value for the $$$.
Kenwood's Excelon page is here, the number of toys is pretty impressive even in the X493, the X993 will do everything but make you coffee in the morning.....
I'm sure others will chime in with other suggestions, most quality companies have comparable units at similar price points.....sometimes it just comes down to looks and how easy it is for you do work with it.....

Holy crap, I think that was my 3rd deck that I ever owned. Added the cd changer to it the day it came out, the CDXM100 I think it was. It was a great unit but I agree, it has had it's day in the sun. What is available now can put it to shame I hate to say. I have a Kenwood Excelon KDCX792 to clear out (my last ones of the last years models) and others if you want some options. You can replace the eq that you have now with a storage pocket so you will not have a big hole in the dash ORRRRRRR your dash will lend itself perfectly to a double din dvd / lcd system as well.

I never really thought that Kenwood made quality stuff. I thought they were kind of average products. They're pretty affordable too. The KDC-X993 is only like $230.
So I'm looking at
KDC-X993
AVH-P4100DVD (Only If I can get it cheap)
DEH-6100BT
DEH-510UB
and the IDA-X305, apparently with which you need to buy a PXA-H100 processor for the advanced sound features to work.
What do you guys think? I don't plan until buying late this year, so unless something way better and new comes out, it's down to these.
