Need a hand with ported box
#1
I'm going to attempt my first ported enclosure and could use a little guidance. I just want to see how my IDQ12 D4 sounds when ported. So, I have a copy of BassBox Pro, and the funny thing is that when the parameters for my sub are entered in the program, it gives a MUCH different design plan than the one from IDQ themselves.
IDQ suggests 1.5 cu.ft and a port size of 3" x 13.75" tuned to 28 Hz. When I try to do this in BassBox, it tells me the vent needs to be 5.6 i.d. x 54"!! WTF?
Anyhow...my software using incompetence aside, I want to tune the box somewhere in the area of 24-28 Hz and it's being powered by the Kicker ZR360.
Someone give me a shove in the right direction, wouldja? Thanks.

^ You wanna know the kicker (no pun intended) is that they are both right Both vents tune to approx 28hz.
IMO the 3" vent may be a bit on the small side, so try to find an aeroport for it to keep vent noise down.
Also, IMO, 28hz is too low a tuning freq. If I was building it I would use a 4" diameter vent 15.5" long for a tuning around 35hz

"Kicker"... are you sure the pun wasn't intended?
I guess what I'm trying to accomplish is to have those really low frequencies from say...a church organ and such, really pronounced. Just an experiment really...something to give me a reason to have a few pints in the garage.
Since you're "IMO"'ing me...what would you suggest to accomplish this? IYO.

Well, I kinda gave you my opinion
If you really want to tune that low then use the suggested 3" vent - the 4" starts getting pretty long.
Personally, if I wanted to summon elephants I would be looking at a larger driver or maybe a box about double that size for your 12.

So if I increase the size of the box that much, would the SQ of the driver start to degrade? I DO have an IDmax at my disposal as well...but I don't think I want to put such a load on my poor little alternator.
Ah...I'll try a couple of things and see what works. It's going to be a long winter anyways.
Thanks Dukk!

The IDQ12 D4 works awesome in the 1.5 ft box tuned to 28hz
A bit of port noise from a 3" port, so make sure the ends have a good radius.
If it's in the trunk, you probably won't hear the port noise anyway.
There's not a lot of punch in the midbass with this sub, but it sure goes low and clean.
You'll need an amp stable to 2 ohms mono, if you wire the coils in parallel. And a subsonic filter is a good idea,or you'll only have about 100 or so watts of mechanical power handling.

Yeah I do realize that...but I also have a Linear Power 3.2 HV that does 1100 watts. How would I justify NOT using that amp on the IDmax?
Then again...my ZR360 was measured at 559 watts @ 4 ohms...should see 700 or more @ 2ohms, then I wouldn't need to tear the amp outta my Stealth...Oooo how I'd love to have that sub in my daily driver.
Thanks for the input though, Chris. It at least got the brain churning.

I think 28hz is fine, but it depends on what you want to do... most music dosen't have much info under 30hz... so tuning a little (or even alot) higher should give a greater overall increase in SPL...
On the other hand tuning low can extend response if you do want to get real low... also group delay is smoother and down lower where it won't be as pronounced all the time...
I perfer to port real low, my last box was 8cubes 2/15s tuned to 23hz and it was awsome

Alrighty. I've got the IDmax out of my Stealth. As best as I could figure with that cursed Bassbox (thanks Ross) a 3 cu.ft. enclosure tuned to 28hz would need a port 4" x 11".
Does that sound right to anyone? Dukk...still there?...buddy...pal..
