READ MY LAST POST ON THIS TOPIC PLEASE.

Hey everyone!

I bought a kicker S15L7
15" square sub 1000rms handling dual 2 ohm.
It will be powered by my Earthquake 700BX amp which throws out 705RMS @ 4ohms bridged.

I need to make a box for this sub and need help!

I have never built a box before but i am good at working with my hands and am good at making stuff.

I really want to make a ported box like on the kicker site, but i heard bad things like it will reduce the life of the sub and so on....

I want maximum SPL.

The box has to fit inside a neon so itll be around 3 cu.ft

If it is too difficult to make a slot ported one i will jsut go with a sealed one.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

the kicker box wont give u max spl. also normally to get max spl u tune high which in turn sounds like crap for daily music.

so u still want max spl?

hdave 11-22-2004 07:20 AM

nope. now i want the best blend of SQ and SPL. preferably leaning towards the SPL side.

Id go sealed, but i kinda want the thing to rattle up my entire car and make everyone around my car to feel it also. and set off car alarms (which my gay muffler does)

I want the box to look like the one on page 15:
http://www.kicker.com/images/manuals...ch%20Brief.pdf

but if you guys think that will be too difficult i could go with a 3 cubic feet sealed one.

Father Yuli 11-22-2004 08:33 AM

that box will pretty much give u the mix u want.

try to look for some basic box building tutorials on the internet

hdave 11-22-2004 08:39 AM

i jsut read quite a few.. i like that box design because the port is facing the same way at the sub so it'll be positioned nicely in my trunk.

on page 28 of that pdf theres a similar box with great diensions and everything. but the port is facing the side.

i cant find any exact specs on that box. like the dimensions of each peice and so on.. know where i could find those?

Father Yuli 11-22-2004 09:16 AM

im really not big on kicker gear sorry

for your application it would be better to have sub and port facing the same way

hdave 11-22-2004 09:19 AM

yea. i jsut need to find some blueprints of a box where the port and sub face the same way. anyone know where i can find that?

Father Yuli 11-22-2004 09:34 AM

how big of a box do u want? tell me your space i will make up a box for u

Haunz 11-22-2004 09:38 AM

eeewww... a smell-7...

(burt coils out of 10)

hdave 11-22-2004 10:41 AM

my trunk is 33" wide, 17" tall and dept can be like 17" also

i wanna keep exterior domensions like 32x17x17 or so.

thank you.

Father Yuli 11-22-2004 10:54 AM

can it be smaller than that? probably wont need all 32 inches across

hdave 11-22-2004 12:49 PM

yea of course it can be smaller.. i prefer the keep the heigh as as small possible, width can be anyhting under 32" and depth is ok by me also

Father Yuli 11-22-2004 01:35 PM

the hight might not be too small, remember the sub itself is 15 inches, then u have wood on top and bottom

Father Yuli 11-22-2004 01:42 PM

17x25x17 external

port will be 15.5 inchs tall and 3 inches wide. 20 inches long. so u will have to do an L shape port. thats tuned to 39hz should give u good spl and still have good bass.

hdave 11-22-2004 04:44 PM

ok so how many boards do i cut and wat is the dimensions of each?

i think i got an idea.. ill try to draw up a diagram and post it here and u tell me if its right.

thank you.

hdave 11-22-2004 07:40 PM

I need to know what size to cut the wood for peices:
F, G, H, I and J

and i need to know the spacing for:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9

Is everything else correct?

hdave 11-22-2004 08:12 PM

number 5 is 5.5" i figured that out.

Father Yuli 11-23-2004 03:32 AM

oh wow. i will do it up for u tomorow

hdave 11-23-2004 04:33 AM

thanks alot yuli.

hdave 11-23-2004 08:36 PM

i emailed a guy at kicker tech. support as soon as i bought the sub and he gave me these dimensions:

Box Parts (Square Prism)
1 Top, 1 Bottom: 17 x 32 in
0.75 (thick) in
1 Front, 1 Back: 15.5 x 30.5 in
0.75 (thick) in
2 Sides: 15.5 x 17 x 0.75 (thick) in

Vent Parts
1 Top, 1 Bottom: 15.5 x 13.92 in
0.75 (thick) in
2 Sides: 2.25 x 13.92 x 0.75 (thick) in

hdave 11-25-2004 12:29 AM

ok... i will be free today after 4pm. so i want to go to home depot and buy my box materials and make it today before dark and hook up my system. but i need some good finalized dimensions.

if i dotn get em by 4pm.. u guys think a 25x17x17 sealed box will give me enough spl to be happy? or should i wait jsut a bit to go for a ported design.

hdave 11-25-2004 09:38 AM

help someone! please!

i have free time and need some serious bass ASAP!

i need a finalized design for a ported box asap because im free all day and and busy tomorrow so i wanna finish this today.

islandphile 11-25-2004 09:52 AM

Just use the box in the PDF from the Kicker site.

It's what I have in my car and it's more than good enough for daily use.

If you really want SPL then, like Yuli said, the music will sound like crap.

Father Yuli 11-25-2004 11:18 AM

here u go gangsta, with this box u should have spl and it will sound alright in your trunk

http://www.canadaspl.com/albums/angus/boxkicker2.jpg

buy 3/4 inch mdf and all the dimentions in the pic are the peices u have to cut. everything there is in inches. have fun

Lethal 11-25-2004 11:26 AM

that is roughly the same design I run my 12" L7 in.

It hits decently deep for spl but still maintains sound quality.

hdave 11-25-2004 06:36 PM

thanks alot yuli. im almsot sure im gonna buy the peices and build the box tomorrow.

i bought 20ft of 4ga welding wire for 17 bucks today so i will run that also.

i hope it sounds goood :D

Father Yuli 11-25-2004 07:40 PM

good price on the wire my friend. i remember the days i used 4 gauge for power, now i use that for like speaker wires.

hdave 11-25-2004 09:48 PM

jsut one question.. how far does the sub go from the inside wall of the port?

Father Yuli 11-26-2004 12:45 AM

as close as possible just how its in the pic

also i just realized something, for best performance the port peices should be 12 and 8 instead of 14 and 6. so if u havent cut the wood yet change those peices to 12 and 8

[ November 26, 2004, 01:48 AM: Message edited by: Father Yuli ]

hdave 11-26-2004 07:31 AM

k.. but if i make it 12 and 8 then the width of the port at the top part will not be 3"

i calculated that its gotta be 12.5 so that the top part of the port remains 3"

and if that part is 12.5" the other port part should be 7.5.. right?

hdave 11-26-2004 08:32 AM

hey a quick question.. around the sub where it screws into the wood... do they screws go straight into the wood or wat?

Father Yuli 11-26-2004 08:41 AM

well u right about the 12.5 and 7.5 i just didnt want to get into the half inch measurments for the port so i kinda rounded them off.

yah screws go into the wood

hdave 11-26-2004 08:58 AM

got any other tips? wat kidna screws to get?

i put a screw every 5" right?

alot of woodglue... wat type of glue is good?

Haunz 11-26-2004 09:35 AM

Any high quality carpenders glue will work... its usually a pale yellow instead of white...

I've also used (forget brand) white glue that is extra thick... worked well, dosen't run, and cures faser...

Also, any good carpender will tell you that the screws are only there to hold the wood together unill the glue dries...

there is no need to use 10,000 screws for one box like I see often enough...

Father Yuli 11-26-2004 10:32 AM

what he said

any carpenter glue from home depot paint section will work.

screws only hold it till glue dries but for high spl boxes screws are good. i use 8x1 1/2 inch wood screws.

how far apart they are is up to u, i never measured, just screw them in. also pre drill with a small bit before u screw.

hdave 11-26-2004 10:44 AM

k thx guys. im off to home depot now :D

we'll see how my first box turns out hehehe. ill post here as soon as im done anyhting and everyhting..

wish me luck bye

islandphile 11-26-2004 11:11 AM

Don't forget to use gasketing foam around the speaker rim to seal to box....closed cell works best.

Also, T-nuts and matching bolts are the catz azz for mounting the sub to the box b/c they allow repeated removal/re-install of the sub w/o having to worry about stripping the wood...and you can really crank them on as tight as you pretty much want

hdave 11-26-2004 11:03 PM

BOX IS DONE!!!

i just need to sand off all the excess glue and crap from the outside, and then put the sub in it and drill holes and screw it in, and then drill a hole in the back to let the speaker wires out and then hook it up and listen and setup the amp and stuff.

thansk for all your help guys ill let you know how it sounds tomorrow morning.

one question though.. how do i setup my amp?

There are three knobs and one switch.

knob 1: BASS - 45Hz (0 to +6)
knob 2: BASS - 30Hz (0 to -18)
switch: xover 12dB - (80Hz, full or 120Hz)
knob 3: Gain

wat do i do and how do i do it?
