Well my new (used) car came with a tape deck... at first I was debating whether to get a real cheap HU and later on get a good HU but I figured whats the point and now I am in the market for a decent HU.

I have narrowed my options to:

- Alpine 9813
- JVC 9750

There is about 50$ diff in price on these units as I found online but I like them both. Any inputs as to why get one over another ? I have a feeling that the alpine will win hands down BUT... honestly I just need the mp3 and a decent look.. all that other "hi-tek" stuff (time correction etc...) I will never use I know that for a fact... soooo what do you guys recomend ? Maybe there is a HU that missed and should look into ?

thanx

Just my 2 cents but I'm thoroughly satisfied and impressed with my Pioneer DEH-P5500MP AND it's considerably less expensive then the other two decks you mentioned.

Has all the same features for the most part ...

MP3
WMA
4x50

yadda yadda yadda ..you can look up the specs for yourself ...

Have a look at most of the forums and you'll se that a lot of people can give opinions on this brand or that brand, but most will not compare them to an Eclipse. If you want eye candy, any brand other than Eclipse will do (I like how they look), if you want a good sounding cd player, you had best listen to an Eclipse or Nak or Denon. If you are just getting started in car audio, this is your most important purchase. If you are concerned about theft and warranty, Eclipse wins hands down.

just JVC isn't one that I, or many other people would go with...try out that pioneer premier deck...quality, or eclipse also makes awesome decks. Whats your price range anyways? Alpine will work too...but I suggest checking out the 5500 pioneer

The marketing dept of various companies says to the owners, build it this way to look like this and sell at this price point and you will sell more of them. Unfortunately this has nothing to do with sound quality. Now all manufacturers have marketing depts, however some do not cater to the eye candy genre. I as a dealer of multiple lines have a luxury that most consumers do not, that is to audition and use equipment on a daily basis, thus my knowledge of brand x vs brand y is usually a little greater than the average bear.
I have asked Panasonic and JVC for example what glowing faceplates with full animation has to do with sound quality, the response was nothing, we just want our cd player noticed more so we can sell more of them. Are you aware that most cd players in the industry, pick on Panasonic here since I sell them use the same tuner in all of thier models, or the same basic amp as well, did you know the laser pickup is also the exact same, so what are you paying more $ for? Bells and whistles that you are not going to ring and blow, that's what (MP3 - sub out and high volt pre-outs aside). All the glitz and motorized faceplates and remote controls included with low end cd players that sell for $149.00 has nothing to do with sound quality.
Do you think BMW will produce a car that goes head to head with the Chevy Cavalier or is not their market...... Eclipse is not built to go head to head with the low end guys at all, they are built for performance and sound quality. Laser sleds that are tuned to resonate at 19hz instead of 70 hz (ever heard the complaint that my subs cause my cd to skip), non clipping true high voltage low impedence pre-outs. (makes it easy for an amp to produce output, keeping the gain low = lower noise threshold and improved sq + a volume control that can play to full output in a fully amplified properly set up system)Have a Panasonic try this last feat, it's not going to happen, why, because the mid fi brands are not built to do this, they are built to hit the price point and look good and that takes away from the sound of a good cd player.

Sorry if if I led you to believe that JVC is a bad brand, it is not at all, matter of fact, if memory is correct,Japan Victor Corporation is particlly if not wholly owned by Matsu****a Electric Industrial Company, the parent owners of Panasonic and many others. There are alot of good brands of cd players on the market today, the key is to find the one that you are happy with, that will do the job you need in the dollar range or close to the dollar range that you can afford.

^^^ Very well said... I am not looking for a flashy HU... I used to have Alpine 7893 and was happy with it... but I want mp3 support now. Anywho... will see what else I can research on the net and go with that.

thanx

You'll be happy with the alpine. Generally speaking, Alpine decks are usually built a little better than JVC. Although the specs may look almost the same, the Alpine likely puts out some cleaner sound.
