New to audio and need subs

I fit a 2.5 cube box (.75 mdf) for 2 sealed 12's and there was enough space for another box. No, you wouldn't get one 5 cube box into it, but you could use two 2-2.5 cube boxes or a 4 cube box.
The SSA XCON 15 is an excellent choice. In 4.25 cubes ported it's ideal. It's a street-bass sub with a good mix of SQ & SPL. You'll most definetly want it ported because it doesn't model nearly as well as other subs in sealed boxes, it starts to roll off at like 45 Hz, so by 25 Hz it's around -24 dB.

MR2NR has many moons of car audio behind him...... The last thing you are going to want is some system that is heavy on one part, lacking on the other part and leaves the vehicle stuggling to keep up. Decide if you want good sound or to go deaf as the way to get to either place is totally different.

Biggest box i fit in mine was 6.75 total and slid in from inside the car with the front seats taken out first ( could go bigger but you would have to build it in the trunk). And just had enough for my amps sitting on top of the box. With a grand you can make any j-body **** good. Myself go with one good 12 or 15 in a moderately sized box (2.5-3.5 cubes) tuned around 35 hz with lots of port area (75sq.in.+), and 1000 watts rms power and you will be more the sufficient. And do not face a big box towards the trunk lid, face port and sub into cabin sealed off from the trunk.

First off, take a look at my cardomain link in my sig for some ideas on what I did to my old Sunfire.
Decide what exactly you want from your stereo and what you're willing to give up in terms of weight and trunk space.
To give you a hint on a couple of the box sizes I had in there: the single RE HC15 was 3.5net (closer to 4.5gross), the two Orion H2 12's were 4.4net (two piece box, using the spare tire well for the bottom piece of the enclosure), the two OZ Matrix Elite 12's were 1.1net sealed each).
Hints:
-for a daily driver you'll get much better bass response if you fire the sub/s back.
-take out the rear 6x9's (only use fronts) and trim out the cardboard from that hole area to allow the trunk to breath into the cabin easier.
-6.5's fit easily into the front doors and I'd highyly recommend them over 5.25's (the only thing holding you back is mounting depth so measure before you buy).
-the factory alt sucks so consider upgrading. With a big batt and all upgraded wire I was getting dimming on 1000rms easily.
-taking off the plastic side trim pieces behind the rear seat (when folded down) makes it easier to fit a wider box in the trunk (put them back on after the box is in there).
Looking around for great used gear you can easily do a VERY nice system that sounds great and gets loud no $1000.
If it was me I'd do a great deck (there's a Eclipse 8053 on DIYMA for cheap), a good set of 6.5's, a 2ch (or 4ch bridged to 2) on the 6.5's, a single ported 15 (that works well on 1000rms and has good mix of SQ and SPL) and a matching 1000rms sub amp. Used wiring can be found cheap on Kijiji or the forums. Grab a mounting kit, antenna adaptor, and wiring harness and you're good to go.
