Well then I guess it's the same as having a pin number, either you play it smart and don't lose it or you're screwed. You can also use any cd, I used to have mine a real old snoop dogg cd that I knew no one would think of...

The other option is if you buy it new you can send it in if you screw up and forget what your cd is, if you are the original owner or you are the first to send in the registration card eclipse will send the repaired unit back to you. I've heard of people that have had their deck stolen and a year or more later it gets returned to them from eclipse because the person that stole it didn't know eclipse fixes it, charges them for it, then sends it back to you. Pretty nice...

also i forgot to mention eclipse has many add-ons like GPS that will work with almost all of the decks. The new ones have area shot, where you can go to their site and map out your route, burn it to a cd and it will give you directions for free, you don't have to buy the GPS for it. Another very nice add-on if you are into SQ is the Digital Sound Processor with I believe a 15 band eq, not quite sure about that but it's pretty impressive

the 5000 has 8volt preouts, so many companies nowdays are going back to low-voltage outputs, even eclipse doesn't offer the 16volt anymore but alpine is down to 2.5 or something like that

I've been looking at the 865 already, played with it's younger brother the 665 at Future Shop and downloaded and read the manual (so I could figure out how to work it ).

Now, when summer vacation is over and I'm back to work, then it will be time to play big time.....

Yes, Eclipse was the other brand that I picked out at first, also a thread on this forum was motivation to look more at Eclipse.

never skipped. Another plus to eclipse is that they have IMO the best anti-theft available. You can make any custom CD you want, choose that for the security disk and once power is d/c the unit is inoperable
the original owner. It also has GPS tracking on a stolen unit, and the serial number is stored electronically so it can never be ground off. If you buy the unit new from a dealer they have a 1 year replacement on any stolen units that aren't recovered, just fill out a form within the first year and they will get you a new deck just like that.
I believe I saw this feature on the Eclipse website, and bears more checking out, didn't know about the GPS and electronic S/N feature however, is this on all Eclipse decks or just the top models ?.

the electronic serial number is in all the decks, and the GPS tracking and free replacement in the first year is available with all eclipse head units. For all the new ones with area-shot you get free GPS if you map it out on their website and burn it to a cd, just pop it in and it will give you the directions. The top models bear more features, but prices run high. The deck my sister got, cd3000 for under $100 used has MP3, wma, area shot (the free gps guided maps), the electronic serial number, and all the rest of the security features. With all the things they are coming out with and now the new lower prices I'm thinking eclipse will become more common than alpine. One thing's for sure, the quality of the D/A converter beats the heck out of alpine.
