new guy with old system, pease help!!

Hey guys, new here and have some questions….below is a list of what I have, its all about 9 years old, but it was all good stuff back then. The vehicle its for is a 91 Mustang trunk model.
I have these questions :

1.which amp should I use, or both?

2. I need a subwoofer box for my two 12” JL audio 12w6 subs which are a few years old. The vehicle is a 91 Mustang trunk model. What is the difference between a ported and an unported box, and where can I get the best value on a sub box?

3. A stereo shop installer said making these door speakers fit in my car (91 Mustang trunk model, PW and PDL) would cost a couple hundred bucks…any other ideas/enclosures that would work?
Speakers are a component set:

MB Quart component set w/COMPETITION 3 WAYcrossovers
QM160TX2 6"
QM100MX2 4"
2" TWEETERS

4. Would like a head unit that plays MP3’s.
Currently have a cd player pioneer deh-p400 what is the best bang for the buck?

5. I need some good 5x7’s, what do you suggest? Are these any good?

here’s what I have:

Amps : Phoenix Gold ZX500
Precision power DCX1000.4

Subwoofers : JL Audio 12w6 (2 of them), need box to fit 91 Mustang trunk model

Rear Speakers : 5x7's (don't have yet)

Front Speakers : MB Quart component set w/COMPETITION 3 WAYcrossovers
QM160TX2 6"
QM100MX2 4"
2" TWEETERS

Head unit : Pioneer CD player 4x45w
model DEH-P4000

any comments, suggestions or input is appreciated. Thanks

i have a retro 10W6 in a sealed enclosure and it sounds alot better than it does in a ported. so i would suggest going the sealed enclosure route with those subs.

The limiting factor for you car is the trunk and how much space you want to sacrifice for the box. A ported box is generally going to play louder. That said though, you have some nice equipment, I would head the sealed box route first as it seems that you are not the type of person looking to blast your ears off with bass response. For rear speakers, MB Quart makes a great 5x7" speaker that would complement those great front speakers you have. Make sure you put sound deadener in the front doors to bring them to life. It is indeed going to be some $ to PROPERLY install 3 way component speakers. While I may be a Pioneer dealer, there is no way in the world that I would use a basic level cd player in this system. If you want to bring a different level to it and give the speakers the input they deserve, consider the Eclipse line of cd player, in particular the CD3200 or CD7200ii (stay with the CD3200 it is all you will need).

thanx for your help so far guys, will the CD3200 sound that much better than the pioneer I have? what do recommend for a head unit with an mp3 player?
I was planning on using fatmat rattle trap sound deadener.....and you are right, not looking to blast my ears off with bass!

I personally would wait to get the rear 5x7s. Install the components properly in the front first, then if really needed worry about rear fill. I don't have any in my car and don't miss them at all. This will free up $$$ to have your 3ways installed right.

Personal preference here. I like rear fill, if it were my vehicle I would use rear speakers.

My first suggestion would be to try getting the most you can out of what you have already......

1: Pay the bucks (if you don't want to do it yourself) to get that 3 way set installed properly in your front doors....this includes lots of deadening as you know and proper mounting plates for the drivers....I like my tweeters up high (A pillars are good) and the other 2 drivers solidly in the doors.....

I would use the PPI bridged into 2 channels to run your doors.....nothing like hundreds of watts per door to bring the front stage to life.....

2: JL Audio say to put the subs in 1.25cuft sealed each....you should be able to build or buy one for anywhere from $70 - $200 taxes in depending and make sure you confirm it will fit in and out of the trunk first....the feeling in your gut standing behind your car with the sub box in your hands discovering it doesn't fit is one you can live without.....

The subs are dual 6ohm drivers, wiring the voice coils and subs all in parallel gives a net load of 1.5ohms which is a little lower than the PG amp is rated for but if you are careful with the gains and the volume control it should be fine.....

3: By all means get a new deck....the higher quality of "newer" school source units is well worth the $$....find one that does all the things you need and don't pay for features you don't want or need....

I wouldn't worry about the rears for the moment......if you get this setup installed and tuned right you probably won't miss the rear fill.....any passengers in the back might, but who cares?....

My $0.02 worth....and if you do get it done I'd love to hear it....
