Hey, what's up man? Where abouts in Oshawa do you live? I've never seen that car around.
Anyway, Audiowaves on Wentworth St built a 69 GTO with the same kind of problem as you....maintaining stock apearance....but they actually managed to build kicks for the guy.
My suggestion would be to check them out

Would it be a better or worse idea for a component system to be installed.
5.25 inch speakers would be partially covered by the dash speaker opening.
Would four 3.5 speakers be as effective?

if you wanted to invest the time and effort I would rather see a 3.5" at each end and then try to get a good 6.5" midbass into the middle, preferably in an enlosure but not necessarily.
I had a customer do that in his late 60s Mustang and it worked very well for him.

You could ahve a set of built-out kick panels or door p[anels made up.
I had/have a set in my 69 roadrunner that are basically screwed into the firewall with one screw. They stick out about four inches, but its negilgible for the driver's comfort, and all you treally have to worry about is stupid/drunk/careless friends kicking the passenger side pod. A set of cheapo thick 6.5" grilles from Canadian Tire can withstand a LOT of kicking, so thats one option.
Or get a set of custom door panels made. Remove the lower portion of the door panel (if it is two-piece, as most older muscle cars are) and mock up a new set off of the mounting holes of the original ones. Then build out on the new ones enough to house a component set or something of the ilk. That way you can save the original ones for possible resale, and still have a nice set of stereo-oriented ones to boot. You could even do them in period-similar vinyl or something to match.
Those are my suggestions.
Putting subwoofers, etc in the truck is easy, and easy to 'hide'. Just find a way in the front that you LIKE, and you'll be happy.
PS - obviously, do NOT cut the door panels...very regrettable thing to do...
