hey everyone. Just found out about this forum today. Signed up right away. Im from Calgary and recently just put a system in my 99 sierra. I got a e10o and a 400.2 avionixx from GCA. All I have to say is wow am I ever impressed with that sub and amp and im even more impressed with the price I paid. I got a custom box built from a&b that is under the rear seat. The only problem with the whole setup is when someone sits on the seat above the sub the seat drops a bit and the sub will hit the persons ***. Im looking at buying a grill for it but I havn't found on yet that would be strong enough. The only one im looking at so far is the one from parts express
Bar Grill
if anyone has a possible solution to my problem any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot
Shane

Most prefab boxes for under the seat of a GM extended cab are the same. The tolerances are so close that as soon as someone sits down it presses against the driver.

My recommendation is to do the same thing I do, whether I'm building a box for under the seat or using a prefab box.

Make a trimring out of either 3/4" or 1" MDF to mount around the circumference of the driver, round out the edges and cover it in speaker grill cloth. It gives it a nice cosmetic look when the seat is folded up and offers more protection for the driver, not only when someone's sitting there, but if something gets dropped on (or near) the sub. It also stops dirt and the like from getting to the driver.

yea that is defently a posibility. thanks...With the box what the installer did was sunk the sub down about half an inch or so so then it helps that much more. But it still isn't enough. do you think that the bar grill from parts express would work cause if that does work that might prob be cheaper since it is only 6.75us. It does say that it is heavy-duty bar design. heres a link if you want to see it

It would probably work but you have to take into consideration that the seat will now sit on the grille, so depending on how high those bars are they may get bent.

With the MDF, the seat will sit on it and not allow the seat to touch the sub, leaving enough room for excursion of the driver.

A lot depends on how much space there is between the bottom of the seat and the top of the driver at full excursion. Chances are there won't be enough space for the bar grille.

so i think ill just make a trim ring but i have a couple questions about that. from the top of the box to the top of the sub their is a 3/4 of an inch difference. So should I cut 2 trim rings from 3/4mdf and put them ontop of eachother to make a 1.5in trimring and then mount it to the box? so then their is 3/4 of an inch from the top of the sub to the top of the grill and the xmax is .72in. So that leaves .03in from the max excursion to the top of the grill. Does that make sense to you?

Yeah, that makes sense. If xmax is .72 inches, that's more than likely peak to peak, so .36 inches would be one way.

But if you have 1.5 inches between the top of the sub and the bottom of the seat, you should already have enough clearance for the driver. You also mentioned that the installer who built the box recessed the driver in about a 1/2 inch. From what you've told me that would mean the driver is 1.25 inches tall from the bottom edge of the basket. If that's the case, one layer of 3/4" MDF should be more than enough; however, if you have the room it's better to be safe than sorry, go with two layers of 3/4.

I think I'm suggesting more work then you want but the results are worth it.

make a box with the subs facing the floor, then no damage can come to them and they will load.

I had some firing into my seat as well and it sounds really bad, I flipped them and made a box to spec and it made everything better.

just a option.

ha ha but I'm a ford guy, we do things right

just bugging ya.

yea their is enough space when no one is sitting on it but when someone sits on it the seat sinks. It still doesn't hit the sub but when i play the sub then it hits the bottom of the seat. I would build a new box but i didn't build it. I got a local audio shop to and i asked him if he could make it fire down but he told me that it wouldn't sound as good and then the magnet would stick into the seat. I trusted his judgment but i wish i could have heard both before i did it but oh well. Its a awesome box. The whole underside is fiberglass and i would say the actual box is about 1.5cf. So i got pleanty of air space and i belive that makes up for the firing position. Im not a expert carpenter and if their is anyone who lives in Calgary that would want to help me that would be very much appreciated.
