New minivan - Start w/ dealer options or from scratch?
 

Considering a new Chrysler minivan. The head unit, even with the nav package leaves something to be desired, so I would most likely change it. I'm curious to get your thoughts on which of these two approaches would be best to arrive at the same end point - full multimedia and nav:

1) Get the nav package from the dealer, including backup camera, rear fold down screens, integrated A/V inputs, 110V power. Change out the head unit, try to make it work with the OEM camera, GPS, etc. Advantage is decent entry cost and OEM look/reliability.

2) Get none of it from the dealer, get the most basic package. Have an installer add all aftermarket components, including the flip down screens. Spend probably 2-3x more in parts and labour but at least everything will interconnect properly.

With my job I drive a lot of new and old cars vans trucks, the sound systems are getting great and verry difficult to add components to , if you are looking for competition supper high quality audio then I would just get the base line van however if you are looking for somthing that sounds nice then mabey a stock system with a small subwoofer would be enough, my suggestion is to listen to the caravans upgraded system and ask yourself what you think?

Not audio related, but if you're getting a 2010 get it with the bigger engine, the 3.3 (180HP) is just not enough for the weight.

The 2011 have only one motor, the new 3.6L 283HP :smokin:

Option 1 is going to frustrate you until you say forget it.

Option 2 might not cost you that much more than the stock option. I've been looking at new cars and the nav option is usually in the $2500+ range. Lots you can do aftermarket for that money.
