hi, a local guy is selling an old school rockford 400a4 for $50. he didnt know the specs on it, so i went digging through the old manuals on Rockford's site. it looks like this amp will do (rms) 50x4 at 4ohms, and bridged to 4ohms it will apparently do 200x2 rms with less than 0.1% THD. so in other words this amp can be bridged to become a 2 channel amp correct?

i'm looking for a 2 channel amp for my components up front (old school rockford fanatic x's from around the same era (2000-2001). each mid handles 70RMS and each tweeter handles 70RMS, so 140RMS per side in total.... would this amp be too much if i keep the gain minimal (for little to no distortion)? it seems like $50 + shipping from the other end of the province seems reasonable for an old school rockford. anyone have opinions about this idea or the 400a4 or think it's a good buy? if so i'm going to pm him and see if he sold it yet.

If that stuff is old school then we need a new word for the ancient stuff I have lying around.....but yes bridged its 2 channel!

from what i remember, those amps were quite solid and the SQ was pretty decent.

For $50.00 buy it like now....unless it has a bad channel...deal is a deal but buyer beware as well.

yeah true enough. even if it has a blown channel, the output from just 2 channels not bridged will give them twice as much as my deck will.. 200x2 is way overkill for my components (if all channels were working) i'd just have to keep the gain WAY down so i get no distortion.

i see your point though. hopefully all channels work, but if not then live & learn right still waiting to see if he still has it.

The Rockford a series amps were in my opinion the last of the good Rockford designs. Back in 2000 when they first came out we scoped one (the 800a2) and it was pretty clean all the way through but really didnt make any spectacular power until the punch bass was turned on. With that on the amp made like 150 more watts but had the nastiest square waveform until the punch bass was turned off.

May have been only that one, but if you dont use that then you are gold.

The old "a" series were great performers and even though that amp is rated for more than your comp set they will be just fine with the gain set correctly.
As for the power thing; many of the RF amps from that day and a few years after seemed to cut back power a bit when the RF Punch Bass remote was plugged in. I had many people tell me they found the same thing. Don't know the reason behind it but just something to add to the above comment. It's just a single boost at 45Hz anyways so I didn't recomend using it for most people anyways.

Agreed. The 400a4 was/is a very nice amp, and that's a steal of a price.

oh well. i REALLY wanted that amp, he lives 4hrs away and won't do paypal or money order... he wants the money right away so no can do.

any of you guys know any info about a Pioneer GM-H200? i sent a PM to Pioneer Guy, figured he'd probably know something about this old school pioneer/ aw well, thanks for all the replies guys. i wanted this one but what can ya do, i'm just going to keep looking at the old school stuff! thanks

Pioneer GM-H200 - Built like a tank and about as heavy as one.
100x2@4ohm
150x2@2ohm
300x1@4ohm bridged

These were great performer's back in the day and could take some serious abuse. We're also talking about an amp that is 12+ years old though so you never know what kind of life its had.
