Options?

I have 2 x RF 10" Hx2s (Dual 4). Wired so they are 4ohm but does not have to stay that way.

My amp recently died on me and Im not looking for options to get the most out of my subs as I was under powering them before.

Should I wire to get 1ohm and run a 1 x 1000-1200w @ 1ohm amp or
Split the subs and do a 2 x (1x 500-700w @ 2ohm) combo?

I already have a 1F cap.

Options and advice needed??

Possibilities I've thought of:

2 x Alpine MDR-M605s (600w x 1 @ 2ohm)
2 x RF P6001 (600 x 1 @ 2ohms)
(Would I most likely need another Cap? for these two options?)

1 x MTX 7801 (1200x1 @ 1ohm)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thnx

I would wire it to 1ohm. Fewer amps cost less, take up less room, less wire, and 1000 watt amps are common so you have many options. You could even do a 1000 watts @ 4ohms aswell and have a nice efficent amp, I have one I"ll sell for $500.

equipment specifics aside, I always try to run my amps at the highest I can... If I can get the power I need at 4 ohm, then I see no reason to lower the resistance...

When you lower the resistance you create more power, and more heat.. A amp putting out 1000W @ 4 Ohm, is going to use more Voltage, but less amps, than an amp putting out 1000W @ 1, or 2 Ohm, where it uses less Voltage, but more amps...

I would evaluate your electrical system, budget, and requirements befor your purchase anything.. that way you can make the best choice.

regards, Mark

A amp that does 2000+ rms @ 1ohm will make around 1000 rms @ 4ohm. Yeah I have one I will sell, PM me if you want details. I accutually ran a pair of 12" HX2's with it @ 4ohm, and it seemed to be a good match.

Actually, an amp that does 2000w at 1ohm will make around 500w at 4ohms, and 1000w at 2ohms if we are talking about typical class D amps. There are plenty of amps that will run 1000w at 4ohms. My RF 1100a2 (2 channel class A/B) did 1400w+ at 4ohms, and my JL 1000/1 (class D) does 1000w at 4ohms all day long.. Either of these can normally be found in the $500+ range.. BTW, I would pass on the caps and invest in a second battery if you're concerned about power issues..

that is correct, all other amp specifics aside, 2000 @ 2 ohm, 1000 @ 4 ohm... there are variances, but if you double the resistance, you cut your power in half...

What About Underpowering?

I know it is better to overpower subs (eg a 500rms sub w/ 600-750 to it) but what about underpowing them.

I have 2 x 10"DVC 4ohm HX2s from a couple years back. I was running them at 4ohms with a MTX6500D and it sounded great. @ 4ohms it was only 450 Watts.

I was thinking about getting two Alpine MRD300 type amps or the MRP-450s x 2 each.

Each set of amps would underpower the subs again but is there any real danger in doing so.

AND;

Is there any huge difference in the V-power and the V12 amps from Alpine aside from the digital filters?

Also, any brand preferences and why? for amps either 350-600x1@2ohm or 750-1000x1@4ohm?

Any normal 2 channel amp will do 4 ohm mono. eg. 250x2@4 ohms will normally do 500x2@2OHMS or 1000x1@4OHMS. AB amps will require more power to run then say a D class digital. If you want a good amp to do 1000W get a USAMPS XT2000D they are like $399.00 awsome amp.

I would invest in a solid 1000 watt amp @1 ohm. My rockford easily makes 1000 clean watts @1 ohm, and runs super cool. After running fairly hard for 10-15 minutes it barely heats up. I wouldn't worry about heat issues running at 1 ohm if you have a reliable amp.
