painful post...idiots...

so i was reading another forum and i came across a post I HAD to share regarding stereo stuff...

Here it is, does anyone else's head hurt after reading that?

So I forked out quite a bit of money, roughly 8 or 9 hundred dollars when putting my system in my SI. The setup was 4 gauge wire running to a switch, ZX750 Kicker Amp (750 watts, but it came with a certificate that says factory tested at 913 watts), and a solobaric S12L7 Subwoofer (750 Watts RMS, 1500 Watts Max).

Of course this setup should work fine and thump hard. *Should*, being the key word here. I installed this setup in mid to late October 06', and the subwoofer blew in early December, lasting maybe a month and a half. Of course I was furious, as I had never blown a sub before, ever. After having to fight with Kicker over the phone to get it covered under warranty, they finally agreed to replace it if I covered shipping. Fine. They also warned me that you only get one free replacement.

So I did some research to see why it could have blown, and apparently I may have been running the GAIN too high (about 70-75%). To be extra cautious this time, I decided to run the GAIN at about 20%, with the bass boost at 90-100% (previously, I had been running near 100% as well). So it got hooked up in mid December, then I wrecked my car December 29th and it sat until the body shop until March 10th.

And guess what? The new sub just blew yesterday on April 2nd, lasting about a month and a half as well. For the price of a L7 sub, I'm WAYYYYY BEYOND PISSED OFF, to say the least. Especially considering that I just ordered wheels last week and don't really have too much money to spend on new subs right now.

Which leads me to my next question. I can get 2 - 12" Audiobahn 1251T subs at $49.00 each, brand new, and they are rated at 400watts RMS and 800 watts Max, each. I have previously owned Audiobahns in my old car, and they ran for about 15 months, no issues at all until I sold the car. Is anyone on here using audiobahns, or can anyone provide some feedback on them? First off, I don't expect them to hit as hard as $300 JL Audios, or Rockford Fosgates, I'm looking at the best sub on an extremely tight budget here. Sorta like how the Kumho ECSTA SPT tires are a great tire for cheap, but still can't compete with tires 2 to 2.5 times its price.

And I'm never buying Kicker again. EVER.

I'd never use bass boost.
I can't comment on other things tho, because I never used those subs.

Anyone who has ever burpe a L7 knows they dont hold up well. My guess is because they have 4" coils if they had 2.5" no problems at all.

...4 gauge wire running to a switch...
:retard:

to turn it on an off.....thats a no brainer............
hmmmm :eyes:

usually if a customer blows a driver i require them to have it properly set up
lord know how much power your putting to the driver at full clipping
when a amp is put on a scope i generally find that they are clipping it at very low volumes
and these are the guys that can hear distorsion
after it is set up and i show them were it begins to clip i usually find that i don't see anymore driver failure from them

I have a strange feeling the guy didnt break the sub in properly. the kicker L7 is a good solid sub, but you NEED to break them in properly. And if you want to get the RMS wattage handling out of them, you should really run a subsonic filter. I dont know anything about that amp he was using though. :dunno:

guy is a tool. he clipped the hell out of it and killed it.

HMMMM:appl:

Good luck with the Adiosbahns.

Bass boost at 100% (+18 dB?) and subsonic off (or nonexistent) sounds like a recipe to exceed xmax rather quickly with a somewhat matched amp/sub combo.

Test your sub/box/amp out in WinISD Pro with a variety of power levels and filters and watch the excursion graph as you change each parameter. Interesting how easy it is to make a sub bump a little too far.

later in another post he mentioned that he got the dual 2's becuase they'd get louder..
so he was running that amp at 1ohm... its not 1ohm stable..
my head hurts more

s14_240sx 04-03-2007 09:37 PM

But 1 ohm is less than 2 so that means its better for the amp. :dunno: ZOMG PUTTING BASS BOOST TO 100 IS BAD. OH NOES111!!11 *runs screaming and crying trying to keep head from exploding*

I wish I could buy all that gear at that price and still get a warranty.....and I sell Kicker at work.

The rest of the post I see no reason for posting about. The guy is a hammerhead.:thumbsdow
