Mr. Marco 07-27-2003 07:46 PM

Hello,
i just finished the sanding on my custom door pannels (holding morel 8").
the last sandpaper used was 320 grit.

I want to paint it black to match my interior (a flat black vinyl type, common to nissans).
what kind of paint would go on nicely and take a rugged appearence? the finish is very smooth right now. i don't want the frekle paint crap...
've heard of some sort of PPG but don't know specifics... any hints out there?

lmk,
Marco

Oooh a fellow Canton owner. nice..

Are you using a gun or rattle can for this?

Mr. Marco 07-27-2003 08:43 PM

Hey, those cantons are amazing!! those tweets are marvelous!!

i have a gun, but what is a rattle can??

Gmac 07-27-2003 08:48 PM

Stick with a gun not a paint can.

Use black car paint same stuff used on exterior, put on 3 thin coats just enough to cover the previous coat, sanding with 1200 grit wet in between each coat, then if you want gloss put on a clear coat.

Depeding on the size the gun you may want to reduce the paint up to 50%.

Mr. Marco 07-27-2003 08:55 PM

if i don't put gloss, will it be a flat paint?
is there nothing that will create a rugged texture?

You can get some texture paint. It is really neat ****. When you put in on it will look just like vinyl. I think they have some at selectproducts.com. It looks AWSOME or instead of painting cover them in vinyl.

Mr. Marco 07-27-2003 09:46 PM

I don't want the vinyl route...prefer the paint.

textured paint eh??

will look into it!
thanks

SEM offers a texture paint. It compliments their line of plastic and vinyl dyes. I would recommend their paint as well as it has a semi-gloss sheen to it, similar to vinyl.

been painting a lot of interiors for customers this year, and depending on your base material you may want to look at endura. only because it is more 'forgiving' if your not perfect with the gun, and it is more flexible to prevent cracking if your pods are really rigid. check with your paint supplier, but i was told not wet sand it, but i did and was real happy with the result. make sure you give it at least clear 3 coats with lots of drying time in between. the last coat should be very light.

Mr. Marco 07-28-2003 07:33 PM

that SEM sounds like it bang on!
i don't want gloss, but not totally flat black either... where can i get it?

i don't want to use clear coat because it will mak the panels stand out too much... won't look stock at all.

what is this endura exactly?
thanks!

t raver1 smith 07-29-2003 09:18 AM

for lack of the tech term for Endura, my best description would be a 'plastic paint'. very flexible very tough, good color selection. and no it would not look stock. the problem i have encountered in the past with not clear coating however is that the panels get super dirty super fast and you can't clean them without ripping off your paint. by the way clear coat does not mean glossy, you decide when you pick up your CC how much gloss you want in it. any reputable autobody supply depot should be able to walk you through the process(it all much easier then it sounds) ;)

Paul Niwranski 07-29-2003 12:43 PM

You should be able to get SEM products from most major auto parts distributors like NAPA, Lordco, Bumper to Bumper, etc.

You could also try using a primer and mixing in tint until you get your color and your sheen. I'm not experienced at this but it seems to be the trend in custom classic rides these days.

I've seen guys use that box liner stuff, its textured and hard, really hard + its not gloss but not flat neither. did i mention hard! dam near indestructable.

roll it on or spray it.

Mr. Marco 07-31-2003 09:26 AM

Hey,
i just went to CarQuest and got the SEM Texture Coating textured paint (1 quart $37). on top of that i also got a satin black spray can so the texture paint doesn't scuff too easily. too bad this texture paint is a single stage and any thinners will wipe it right off otherwise i would give it a couple of thin coats...
gonna do it today and take pictures... hopefully it'll turn alright and i can take pics to post!

wish me luck!

Paul Niwranski 07-31-2003 12:13 PM

Good Luck!

Mr. Marco 07-31-2003 04:02 PM

Thanks!

It's done. painted, and mounted. awesome fit, but its way too glossy..damn. however, now its just a matter of findinng another flat black to put on top of it...

and it sounds great too!! much more midbass up front... more detailed too. however, imaginf is non-existent as of yet since the current set-up will be removed and i can't justtify spending the time for it until the new stuff comes in.

thanks boys,

Marco
