A entry level Eclipse will school the Pioneer that you are interested in. It is not built to be a light show, it is built for sound quality. Here are another couple of options for you to consider.
(1) the entry level Eclipse CD3403 has MP3 built in. It does not have sub level control but does have true 2.7 volt non clipping pre-outs and 1 19hx resonant frequency on the laser sled. To get around the sub level issue (and if you think a Pioneer 5volt is better than the Eclipse 2.7volt (it's not though)) look into an Audio Conrol 3.1 . It is a line driver, master volume control and sub level control + other gadgets all wrapped up in one package.
The better route to go is...
(2) the Eclipse CD5423 - a 5volt non clipping preout, same 19hz laser sled, NO MP3 but now has sub level control. This will allow you to grow your sytstem, how... like this. If you put inb the Pioneer your system will never sound as good as an Eclipse, no matter what you do or add. If you forgive the MP3 in the Eclipse for now (add it later in one of two ways)you will have a superior sounding audio system with far more capabilities of expansion. Add the commander advance later as was previously mentioned or add the NEW Eclipse 20g hard drive that you can record on in the vehicle. This module comes with a docking station for the home computer so you can do all the downloads you want, no more buying cd's, no more burning the cd's etc. This is the direction that the marketplace is going and I am positive that you will see more manufacturers heading in this direction, why? Because they are being forced to by the recording industry, it is also "cheaper" for the manufacturer to have a device like this as compared to builing expensive laser transports etc.
Just $.02 worth of advice, you would be very wise to consider all options, buy what will do the best job for you.

Go for the 940 if you can find a good deal on it, or an Eclipse 8063 if you can find a good deal on that, or even the older 8062 model (Try the ECA forsale section). BTW, your friend is dreaming if he thinks he can get $825 for his 940.

Panasonic 602U
Clarion 835mp
Older Alpine
Eclipse 8443
and a bunch of others
the eclipse sounded better with the eq set to flat while the others had been adjusted. I had no bias going into listening to it, I personally never thought a deck would make that much of a difference but the Eclipse blew me away.
