Possible Chuffing/Port Noise

I'll start off with all the necessary info.

— Trunk setup
— Two 12"s
— AB 500.1 @ 1 ohm
— Enclosure faced to fire into cabin, port on drivers side, 4 cubic feet @ 38hz
— 45's in every corner of the enclosure
— Sealed off from trunk with expanding foam
— Only heard when playing music, not tones

When at higher volumes, there is a certain 'chuff' or 'port noise' that you hear on certain notes. Its very hard to explain, but its almost as if the note is 'flexing' like the panels/windows of a car do.

The only thing that came to mind was an issue with port noise...

Any other suggestions as to what it is? Or how it can be stopped?

I thought the rule of thumb was 16 sq in. per cubic foot?

^ That rule of thumb makes no sense.

I take it your box software doesn't model port velocity? If not, use this link as a guide for minimum port area: PORT TOOLS
