So the guys who installed my amp routed the signal wires and power wire next to each other. I have determined this to be the cause of the constant static/hiss. I paid them $240 to do a full installation of 4 speakers (component and coaxials), 4 channel amp, and a new headunit. They finished in 4 hours. Trying to diagnose this problem, I have discovered this routing method to be highly unproffesional. The guy seemed trustworthy, although I hired him on craigslist so I can't be sure.

Do you think I should try to have him redo the wiring, and if he doesn't, what do you recommend I do?

 

Wouldn't hurt to have them check out the problem.

 

How did you determine that this is the problem? Did you physically move one of the sets of wires and the static/hiss went away. If so, it would be the first time I have ever seen it.

Generally if you have static/hiss, the gains on the amp are too high.

 

The wires are secured together throughout the length of the car, so granted, i have not physically checked this. My hypothesis for this comes from the numerous (10+) sources saying to not do this, as well as people with similar problems which went away when they fixed the wiring.

Additionally the problem is independent of my gain settings. If you know of people who have their systems wired like this but do not experience static, that would be very helpful.
