Hey guys,

So I went to replace my fronts and rears tonight. In the front I had kenwood KFC-P605IE comps and in the rears had some older coax pioneer 3-ways. Both sets say they are 6.5". Now, I bought some pheonix gold Octane R6.5 coax to replace rears and PG tantrum-x 6.5 comps for the front. Neither pair fit, they are both too big for the holes. Now, they are supposedly 6.5" speakers, my question is why do the new PG's not fit? I have my car torn apart right now and am quite aggrivated. What do I need to get to fit in the holes? BTW, my car is a 1998 subaru impreze 2.5rs.

Not all 6.5" speakers are the same diameter. In fact some companies do, or at least used to, offer both 'standard' 6.5" and 'DIN' 6.5" which are smaller diameter and usually shallower too.

Past there, some 6.5" speakers have a small enuf basket to fit a DIN hole but a wide enough flange so they fit the large hole as well.

Provided you have enough depth for your new speakers, I suggest just trimming the metal so they fit.

 

get the hole saw or grinder out, i have a zx2 and bored the fronts from 5 1/4 to 6.5 sounds way betterdont forget the deadner either those pg will get the door rattleing(if you dont already)

 

OK, thanks. Now, how can I tell if the 6.5" speaker I am buying is the one I am looking for? I want the smaller of the 2 obviously, but how do I know? The PG ones I have do not fit and I can not make them fit due to depth issues.

Can you tell me how to tell whether I am getting 'standard' or DIN?

Very very loose rule of thumb is that generally 'American' brands have the larger frames. Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine, JVC, Sony, Panasonic, etc will usually have the smaller frames.

 

oh yeah - past that, most speakers have the cutout dimension right on the box. Measure your door opening and get something the same or smaller.

 

Add the European ones to that as well, they usually have larger frames than the japanese.

 

Great, thanks for the help guys...I would have never known that! PG makes 6" speakers as well. Would those fit instead of the 6.5"?

another thing you can do if you really want pg in the door is make a spacer, use a peice of mdf or find some thick plexi and cut the plexi or mdf to fit the speaker and yet you will be able to use the factory cut out. had to do the same thing for mine.

plexi will be better as it is totally water proof unlike mdf takes a little painting to keep it from swelling from moisture.
