i was just wondering what everybody uses as their reference system, not reference tracks but system.
i use the alpine f#1 status cd player, cda7990, and the f#1 status mrvf900 amplifier, running a pair of avi bsm direct component speakers in some killer custom built cabinets.
i was wondering what people use for reference to listen to before trying to set up a car, whay do you use to listen to so you know what a track is supposed to sound like before evaluating or setting up a car.
at home due to the lack of a decent room for listening i use a great set of sennheiser headphones, i was new to headphones and was stunned at how dynamic they are

In response to your question, I use a good pair of panasonic monitor headphones model RP-HT710. Here is this year's model (I guess). For 70 bucks, I'm a happy camper.

I also use Sennheiser phones.
I have a pair of HD-600 Sennheiser phones with the ZU Mobius cable upgrade - powered by a Gilmore v2 prototype headphone amp(go to head-fi.org if you have any q's with headphones).
Great gear you have!
craig.

defro, I assume that's the "shop" equipment. Man, I wish we had shops like that where I live.
I don't have a reference system set up right now. But, from my prior experience with really high end home audio gear, I know how certain tracks are supposed to sound. I remember how they made me feel more than anything, and that's what I search for in my car.
Really good stereos make you forget that you are listening to a stereo......that's my goal.

I really like to go and audition a nice set of home tower speakers to get reference. I listen to the towers only and no added sub. I find the Paradigm Studio line to be very accurate and detailed. The Monitor series are also nice if you can't find the Studio stuff.
Sit yourself in a room with only the pair running and put in your reference music. Try to take mental notes for tonality and stage.
Other than that, I do alot of listening in my car with my Focal 165kx's (Mistrel series) with very little sub added. I have my typical standby music, but like to audition new tunes all the time. So I guess in a real car application, I use those for a reference.

I have a pretty nice home theater, Harman Kardon, Nuance, Paradigm. I also have the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX speakers for my PC which has an Audigy (can't rememeber which one) sound card. Between the two I get a good reference. If I still need a little more, I have a $100 set of Sony headphones I can hook up to the Klipsch or Harman Kardon.
I think it's pretty good, those Klipsch speakers are amazing.

I can't remember the name of the transport and the D/A converter but the rest is Wilson Audio Grand Slam speakers and Krell mono blocks all wired with the fattest MIT cables I have every seen.
I use a couple of Sheffield discs, Eagles Hell Freezes Over (cause it was recorded just like the DVD so you can get location ques) and I use Chris Gaines (Garth Brooks) track 7 cause a male voice is very hard to recreate.

Oh and the best reference is always the actual raw musical instrument...............
When I first started competing I would always hear that the high hat was not natural I would shake my head in agreement and walk away asking myself what the hell a high hat was. One day I walked into Long and Maquade and said "what the hell is a high hat" explained what I was interested in and 4 hours later I walked out with a complete understanding of how drums should sound.................................
Learn what creates what you hear, unless you understand that your just pissing in the wind............

yes the f#1 is shop gear, on display.
stunning gear to say the least, my reference even compared to alot of "home" gear ive listened to.
do you have one of those listening experoences that really sticks with you, unforgettable, for me it was about 5 years ago, angstom obbligato's with a california audio labs tube d/a converter, with a sonic frontiers tube amp, a listening session i'll never forget, just one of those weird moments
