Replacement Tweeters?

I bought some Alpine SPX-177A's from a friend recently for a ridiculously low price. He wasn't using them anymore and wanted them out of the house. They worked fine when they were taken out of his car.

But when it came time to install them for some reason neither tweeter would work. I checked the crossovers at home on and they seem to be working well.

Now I gotta confess. I dropped one of them. Onto a hardwood floor. I suspect that would be enough to damage it. How durable are tweeters in the dropping sense?

I'd like to buy another set of tweeters that will work well with this set. Is it feasible to do this? And can anyone recommend a set of tweeters that aren't harsh?

Thanks.

I'd definitely recommend the DLS Iridium tweeters if you're looking for something that isn't harsh. they sound great, very balanced, and are super forgiving as far as mounting locations.

email me, or talk to tom or mark from kankar.

Dropping a tweeter generally won't kill it. Being that they are that particular tweet I would suspect your friend nuked em.

There's a whole wack of decent tweeters out there. MTX's TXC.1 is a nice unit.

Thanks for the replies. My friend said that they were working fine when be pulled them out and I think he would have noticed the tweeters not working. Mind you he also mentioned that he played them pretty loud.

Thanks for the info about dropping them not usually causing damage.

I'm at the looking around stage right now.

What about these?

^ Yes, if you are into ordering a set online, I definitely recommend the Seas tweeter. Personally I'd opt for the metal dome though. Check Solen's main menu as well - sometimes they are the same $$$ as Madisound but in Canadian dollars and no border hassels...

^ That's been my experience.

Over the years there have been some bad performers here and there for several brands and that tweeter hits my list.

Incidentally, earlier I did not mean to imply that your friend hosed you by selling you bad speakers. Sometimes it is surprising what people cannot hear

Thanks Dukk,

The guys at solen got back to me recommending the Max-Fidelity MFDT30neo because it comes with a bunch of mounting hardware. I'm going to look at the dimensions of the Alpine mounts to see if the Seas will fit and make a decision based on that.

I don't think that my friend was trying to rip me off. I ended up buying the component set and all its hardware for $80, so I don't feel too bad about replacing the tweeters.

ive got a similar problem.

i got a set of spx177s and one tweeter doesnt tweet, so ive been searching high and low for something that will keep up.
so far ive eaten two sets of used clarion tweets, and burnt up a 5 year old pair of mtx

i was planning on getting either the seas or vifa from madi, but ill check out solen.
