does anyone have any experience with the performance of shallow mount subs, specifically 10". i'm looking to make a spare tire enclosure and won't have more than 4" of depth available. I'm looking for recommendations for a good budget/bang for the buck sub

 

The JL 10TW3 is the best I have used.

 

i was hoping not to spend that much. anything else you would recommend on the lower budget spectrum. i'm not looking for SPL, just something that will blend in decently.

I have used the first gen MTX ones and they were good as well, but cost about as much as the JL. I haven't used the current gen MTX ones but expect they would be decent.

I have heard the Kenwood is pretty good but have not used it myself.

 

Before you decide, you have to also consider how much clearance you need above the sub. Many shallow mount subs need over an inch above to clear the surround.

i can build up a bit of a false floor if required but i'd really rather not as the back seats fold flat. it's a legit concern as the spare is quite tiny (it's a honda fit).

 

I just bought a Pioneer TS-SW2502 10" shallow mount sub. It is 1200W peak / 400W RMS. Powered with a monoblock amp which is providing 200W RMS to sub. Still tweaking with settings but it sounds really decent. Price wasn't too bad (not sure what your budget is).

You could also try the Pioneer TS-SW251. Exact same sub, just lower RMS handling: 50W - 200W RMS. About $30 cheaper I believe too. Haven't tried this one, but shouldn't be too different from the one I have. Sub looks awesome too.
