That's about how long I've had this replacement head unit for my lemon HU?

Past three days, it hasn't liked the cool mornings. Turn it on, the face "freaks out", and it shuts down. Hit the source button, it just freaks out and shuts down again.

Drive a few blocks until the heater warms up a bit, and it works fine.

I have been *so* unlucky with these head units...

K so I took it to Rod, told him what was wrong, and that the cd loader mech. was probably very dirty.

He doesn't believe me when I say I drive four hours a day on average... That means 8, 9, even 10 hours a day when we're busy. So if I'm playing audio cd's, that's ten accesses a day... Even mp3 there's two or three accesses a day.

Yep, rollers were mucho dirty, and he asked if I have a white dog... Yep, I do, and she's not even allowed in the van for that reason.

Nevertheless, he cleaned her up and couldn't get the weird power on problem to occur (as I expected), even after sticking it in the freezer. I figure it might just get better from the cleaning, so we'll see.

ANYWAY... I'm about to stick her back in the van, and would like to address something I meant to a while back... My Sub Out preout is only one, it's not the normal two, as they make the other one for a centre channel since it's a 5.1 deck. So I have this pluggged into a splitter, and then the splitter into a normal pair of RCA's running to the amps at the back.

I assume this is splitting my 5v preout down to 2.5 each... which sucks, IMHO. Can I run just one preout into an Orion 1200d? I've read the Orion manual and can't find this info anywhere...

Ya, I avoid shutting the deck right down all the time to save wear on the flipout. This is simple with a Kenwood, you just shut it off with the Source button and it shuts down, lights are still on, shows a clock on a pretty background, and stays open. This is fine as it sits in the shop driveway waiting for my next trip.

But still... The flip probably averages four or five operations a day, not including disk access. So that's why I'm thinking the dirt and crap in there coulda done it, at cooler temps it just gets to stiff or something.

Thanks for the info on my preouts, I'll just leave it as is then

So it screwed up again this morning... Not THAT cold out there even, it's +2c this morning. Started the van with the remote start too, so it was even a little warmed up... But the HU wouldn't work until there was noticable heat coming out of the dash.

Guess I'll take a video of it tomorrow with my digicam and see what the techs think...

ok so this is freaky.. GrizZz i was meaning to ask you the same thing about the preout!

i also have the excelon, and what i did was left the center channel preout alone and hooked a Y-Cable into my SUB preout.. to split the single preout into 2 Inputs for my amp.. is that the same thing as you did?

just wondering because although i had it installed at the shop, i just ran my RCA's up front from my amp to the hole in the dash (for the deck) and noticed a few days later, they only had 1 rca hooked up to the 1 preout! and the other one was just dangling there. and they didnt even tell me.

anyway sorry to jack the thread, was just wondering if i did the preout thing right

also when you go into the speaker level settings, and it says CT/SW i assume that means Center/SUB ? or am i wrong?

Yep, that's how I have mine hooked up, a splitter on the sub preout right behind the head unit, Both splitter ends plugged into a normal dual RCA line that runs to my sub amps. Having just one RCA run to some amps is fine, they design some of 'em that way. But my Orion manual didn't address the issue at all, so I felt it was a safe assumption that I should, in fact, split it into two.

BTW, cool that it doesn't lower the preout voltage by splitting, but it must degarde the signal someway, yes? No?

Yes, on the centre/sub thing. Also, if you don't use a centre channel (I don't yet, guess I need a sixth amplifier eh ), then tell the head unit that you don't have a centre channel, so that the SRS and the Dolby-PLII adjust their filters/enhancers to compensate.

To do a full setup "the right way", shut off with the source button so that it remains open, and push & hold the Q button to enter the main menu. Where it asks if you want a PRO setup or EASY setup (easy is the default), select easy. Then power up the HU and adjust everything you can, the cabin type, speaker types, and if you have a centre or not, etc.

Next, shut 'er down again and go back to the main menu, and switch it to "PRO" setup. Power on again, and NOW set your XO's, EQ's for each speakers, DTA, etc.

Just yesterday I broke out a tape measure and measured the distance from my head to each set of speakers and punched that into the DTA... Seems to have worked quite well

I have yet to figure out the Position (POSI) settings though... Possibile settings are Front Left, Front Right, Front, and All. They each sound very different, but can't decide what sounds best, or the logic they're looking for. I guess it means that to optimize sound for the driver, select front left, or to optimize for both front seat passengers, select Front. But that's just a guess, the Chinglish Kenwood manuals are so vague, they tell you HOW to set something, but not WHY to set it, or what the setting actually does

I love this head unit, I just wish I didn't have such rotten luck with them. Maybe they should make me an official product tester or something!
