Update - My HU is getting worse, the flipout controls don't behave like they're "supposed" to and it freaks out at times still... I figure it's a "brain chip" for the flipout, a rheostat (or whatever) that tells the brain chip what the flip is doing, or a ribbon cable connecting them.

But what do I know. I just know it's gonna be another lemon.

Email sent to my dealer, waiting for reply.

More on the settings too - Been playing with that "Posi" setting... Each setting changes everything dramatically, there's nothing subtle about it. I think I like "Front" best. Would sure like to know what this setting is actually doing...

Hey GrizZz
It sounds to me like there is a cold solder joint somewhere either in the face, ribbon cable to the face or somewhere on the bus of the main controller. I've seem similar things with other units from Sony & Pioneer, they are very hard to trace. Sounds like it was made about 3PM on a Friday of a long weekend!!

Good Luck, J

Nope, can't make the centre pre-out into a sub pre-out in these Kenwood's...

3pm on a Friday.... Ya no kidding. After cleaning it inside a few weeks ago, my tech said that it even looked slapped together - a ribbon cable wasn't in all the way, etc. This is very probable, as this is not the HU I originally purchased. I bought a KDCX969 originally. Had it for almost two years, it was in for warranty service FOUR times. The last time I had "had it", wrote a big letter saying I want the lemon replaced. Over the two years they (Kenwood Canada) were hard to get any results out of - my dealer usually had to make multiple phone calls pressing the issue. So in the end they gave me this KDCX979 as a replacement.

Which is all fine & good, it's a better unit, and lasted longer before it's first screw-up. But now it's screwy too...

So....... I have my van all tore apart right now (see the "Extra DIN" thread in the Install forum) for renovations. So I took my HU out, which is very unhappy now - it takes me 1/2 an hour to get it working each morning - and gave it to my techs.

They, understandably, didn't really want to deal with it. "When did you buy it?" And I had to explain that yes, it's only 6 months old, but no, my warranty EXPIRED six months ago, as I bought the original 2 1/2 years ago. "But I KNOW it's not under warranty, I just need it fixed, it's not doing me any good right now."

"Oh..... Well..... Okay, we'll have a look at it."

"Great. Keep it as long as you want, I won't want to reinstall it in the van for a couple weeks."

So ya, they've got it right now. I sure hope they can fix it and it's not just more disposable Chinese junk that costs $1000.

hope everything goes well for you... never know, might be an easy fix? man that sucks:S

Yeah, that bites. If you have to get a new deck, try another brand as you know some people have no luck with some brands. I know my family or I can't buy anything made by General Motors as it seems to be a family curse that no matter what model, they will always cause us problems. One even had a dollar sized hole in the side of the engine block on a 3800 motor(usually pretty good)...Brand new off the truck!

Sooooo.... Last week I stopped in at my stereo shop (was delivering something, they're a customer of mine too)... Rod comes out and sez "So I fixed your head unit."

"What?? Really? Already?!?!"

"Ya ya come try it, it's been playing all day..."

Now, when I gave it to him the week before, I showed him what was wrong. But maybe I didn't stress that once you get it working, it works fine, till it cools off again, or you mess with the controls.

So I walk up to it, start punching buttons...

"Beep... beep.. beep..... ttthhppbbtbtbtbt" the face freaks out, and it shuts down. Poor Rod, he's just standing their in disbelief...

I think we both said "Doh!" at the same time even.

So anyway, I told him that's what ya gotta do to test it, try to adjust the flipout position.

So then last night I was on the 'net researching and thinking "ah geez, this head unit is done I'm gonna have to eat it". I mean, I bought it 2 1/2 years ago (the original, this one is about 6 months old, but my purchase was 2 1/2 years ago), I've put about 150,000 hard city km's on in that time, and I couldn't even begin to caluclate how many hours are on it, with time playing at the shop, or at the lake, etc. So since I'm in the market for a DVD setup for the van already, I started looking at new HU's. There's nothin' out there that has the features I want and am used to... Even the Alpine's and Eclipses, without spending a small fortune, ya just can't get all the goodies. Which brought me back to Kenwood, and their sweet TOL DVD HU, the KVT-915DVD. It's also known as the XXV-05V on the US website, where better details & specs can be found. I like the two late-model TOL Kenwoods I've had, a lot. They have kickass sound, and all the features I want and more, for a decent price. Maybe I'm just unlucky, "cursed" with the Kenwood brand... But nah, I've had good luck with their amps & speakers, it must be just bad luck...

So I was thinkin' that I'd go see Rod and tell him to hold off, we should get a hold of Kenwood and work out a trade-in. He sez no, he found the bad switch, it came out in pieces. "Smallest switch I've ever seen!" "Part's on order, and we ordered five of them."

Cool enough. So now I wait some more

And since my renovations are almost done in the van, and I was sick & tired of cruising around for the past two or three weeks with no tunes...
I hooked up my eight year old Alpine to my front amps today, so I'd have something to listen to over the next week or so.
