Okay..so it wasn't my brightest move. I went and purchased a prebuilt box after reading many reviews about it. It is a Polk Audio DB12-2. I liked the sound of it when I heard in the store. So I purchase this monster http://www.polkaudio.com/caraudio/products/subs/db212/
and bring it home in the van. I drag my poor wife outside to help me get this thing in.

I then discover, despite what the sales guy told me, I can not seem to fit in the trunk. I try flip every which direction and finally end up talking all the plastic around the inside of the trunk off to try and squeeze it into the trunk of my 1994 Honda Accord sedan. Heck, I even try taking out the seats. Well after scratching it a bit and cursing I finally managed to get in the trunk the problem is it is facing forward (subs aimed towards the seat). Will that make a huge difference to the sound? (unless I cut the monster in half there is now way I can make if face rear firing).

On the plus side..good luck to the bugger trying to steal it.

 

I'd guess that it'll sound much cleaner (no trunk rattle) than would a rear-firing set up, but may lack output in comparison due to cancellation (which could be taken care of by sealing off the trunk entirely - sounds like you're 99% there now anyways).

 

You'd really have to try different positions to see which is to your liking (not the answer you want, huh?). Generally, rear/firing facing subs are the preference. Why? I'd probably mangle the explanation (and have any number of experts argue otherwise), but you alluded to it earlier - wavelengths. Plus, you're playing directly into seat cushions/frame. If you get a chance, try it in different positions in a car that it'll fit into; you'll have a better idea then. Happy listening.

 

Went to importrfest on sat. and saw a civic hatchback w/ two 18" w3's and that was AMAZING! It was shaking the floor. It was crazy insane!

Forgot to mention that I bought a new car... it's a 1988 crx...

welll if you can only get it to fit in that way then i would say your stuck to firing forwards. But like mentioned above trying diffrent positions will help alot, although such a big box i doubt you want to move it at all! lol

If you have them firing forward, i would think if you flip the seats down it would probably sound real good IMO. Although might lack some boom because of sound wave cancellation. Its real hard to tell because of all the variables. Best thing to do is just play with it and have fun.
