Yah, but the guys with the Earthquake 12's they got for next to nothing in a raw MDF box they made themselves also doesn't help put $$$$ in your till. With street class SQ systems sounding as good as or better than ultimate class SQ systems there needs to be something to differentiate between them.

I think that install and showmanship should play a part in SPL competitions.
It doesn't have to be huge but a little recognition for the guy that has a carpeted/vinyl/'glass box with a permanent install, clean wiring and some daily driving SQ.
As opposed to the raw mdf, burp box sitting on the back seat with the amp screwed to it or just laying on the floor held down by the seatbelt or whatever.
The quality of the vehicle, cleanliness, installation and performance to determine a winner or winners.
I am biased since I am getting tired of being beat by a POS with a burp box on the back seat with a bank of batteries on the floor.
If I spent half of what I have spent on mods for my truck I could buy a POS hatch or crx, a 12" or 15" sub (a bad mamajama)with a big *** amp I could be hitting numbers much higher than I am.
I do okay for SQ, SPL, looks, performance, reliability and daily driving. I enjoy it and thats what matters most in the long run,
I know what to expect when I compete and if I want to do well I have to go with what works and that is basically spend the cash on the gear and use whats left to buy a rust bucket to install it in.
Yeah I'm whining but what better place to do it?
Don't take anything away from the competitors now but I say more recognition for the well rounded competitor. Sometimes that is a harder job to accomplish and I always give props to the person that can do it all and still be competitive.

1. Interesting, but overall the show has to be for the "little guys" -- we have to do things to make them interested enough to continue with and reinvest into the hobby.
2. At shows, slurppe contests, deck tosses, etc have always been nice add ons to keep interest at the event.
3. Pat is exactly right about trophies... I've had many guys ask about them -- it's funny -- the same guys we should be trying to encourage -- newbies in lower classes -- are getting nothing out of coming to shows -- trophies for lower classes (or certificates of their score) are a nice way to give them some recognition.

I think if you had seen James car it would fill in the blanks for you. The care he has taken and the amount of hours dedicated to the install shows,(the wiring is bolted down every 3" for example) EVERY 3"!. I might agree on the "bonus points" idea if it didn’t sound and image as well as it looks.
He’s in a pro category, and will be judged accordingly so he must step it up.

.i think that the pro comp in sq or in spl, only goto the precise shows that they need and most likley never by any thing. its the dudes that have the right attitude about it but are misinformed that will open the cashola. westecs car is a prime example of what you can do to sell product in your store. it shows the value of the shop and the meticulious work that a shop is capable. but spl too shows that the shop can hit the numbers when needed (amanda car). show was great cause it had many good things. flashy cars brought em in, the attitudes made them stay. no one fought or argued(i think defro wouldve kicked them out) and no one cried. that pile of pop on that table kept spectators near. i think that about 50 cars are thinking about next uear already. and we being one of them.

icon, i have seen james' neon, and listened to it, and there is no question that he spent an absurd amount of time putting tie-wraps every 3", and color coding the shrink wrap etc etc. my point isnt wheather he did it or not, its why he did it, i know james quite well, hey.. wheres my 40 of cr?, i think the pro catagory should be to showcase the best of the best, and if "stepping it up" means doing silly things like tie wraps every 3", then so be it i guess, anyway back on topic, i think once people realize how expensive trophies are , ours were 1900.00$, they may get a bit gun shy, aactivities at shows have to be on going and a pa system and someone with a good personality is critical, lots of tshirt giveaways, most manufaturers will give you tons,, we had over 100 shirts to give away not to mention a frightening amount of gear, one last comment about the farmer box guys, maybe spl competitions are a victim of themselves in allowing firehazzrd installs to compete on a world class level, i will use rob vo as an exapmle, this guy competes world class, and does incredibly well, in a car i was scared to get to close to, it was a pigsty, so long as the sanctioning bodies do nothing about it, dont blame the players, blame the game, and dwvw, my neon since built has brought me over 100,000 in jobs , including a 45k job i just got, maybe people have to build better selling tools or use the ones they have better, or stop trying to go after a market that isnt ecomimically sensible, im not sure what the answer is, but i will swear to this, building sq systems is a far better way to put $$$ in the till than spl systems, at least in the market ive created for myself, now i know everyones market is different, but i also believe that your market is what you make of it

I totally agree. And attention to dteail in wiring can do the same thing as your fiberglass trunk. It can show what's possible and shows the installers attention to detail. Painted fiberglass does the same for SQ as wiring, nothing. But both can make someone go "wow" I want the guy who did that to do my car. Does it mean they are going to want wiring or fiberglass? No, but it shows the installers talent none the less.

if you really think that some pictures of some nice wiring is as impressive to a customer, or has the "wow" factor of a nice painted one piece fibregalss trunk, i would suggest that you get out on the sales floor more frequently

Of course it doesn't, but it shows more attention to detail for those in the know. I mean an Escalade on 26's with 42 video monitors will wow the crowds as well, but veterans will most likey just puke. Not trying to say painted fiberglass will, but I am more impressed with awesome wiring than painted fiberglass, and I know alot of other people feel this way as well.
