speaker amp goes into protect when volume turned up

as I was driving yesterday I hear my speakers make scratching noise all of a sudden and then no sound, only the subwoofer going. I opened the trunk and noticed the ground cable came off the speaker amp (Alpine MRV-F540). It didn't really look like it coud've touched the positivie when it popped off. I turned it back on and sound is there. But.....

Here's the problem. I turn my deck volume up over 14 (out of 35 on an Alpine CDA-9857) and the amp goes into protect mode. The light turns red on it. I turn the volume down and sound is back and light is blue again. And when music is playing before shutting off it comes from all 4 channels.

Does my amp need repairing now? Is it blown? Maybe S&S guys will chime in?

It sounds like wiring could possibly be an issue however, I suggest to get the amp tested on the bench anyway - it's the fastest, easiest, and cheapest way of isolating the problem.

Make sure you scraped the paint away from the ground. Same thing was happening to a buddies kenwood amp, used some sandpaper and got all the paint of and that solved the problem.

weird stuff, I cranked my system this morning and speakers did not shut off and just kept playing at any volume without any problems. I'm happy and confused at the same time Maybe it's that huge pile of bird crap I found on my car this morning fixed it

I have had these issues with class D amps, mainly my Memphis 1600D.

I found it was sensing low voltage and flipping into protect.. I found it very odd as My Wiring is equivelant to 1 Gauge. It Would only go into protect at night - when the car lights were on..

The Solution that worked for me was installing a seperate 10 Gauge wire for the Remote Turn On For the amp.. as the voltage in the amp/antenna lead from the deck was dropping - I wired it to a relay - problem solved..

There is a few things on the market that will do this aswell - I have seen it on line level adapters by PG to name 1 of them.

If it still fails go see S&S Electronics in Markham off McCowan - they are the repair specialists and very easy to deal with..
