properly, you dont use songs, its a tone, or a frequency, whatever you want to call it.

very similar thing was being discussed.
you basically want to find the frequency your system plays best at(best on the meter, not by ear) and then play a short 2-3 second burst of that tone to get your score. you have 30 seconds, incase you screw something up, or want to turn it up at the end, or find ur frequency, or w/e....hope this and that link help

what if u never got metered? you dont know what sounds better not to the ear but the mic for the highest db? i found a sweap from 10 hz to 200hz or so should i play and extrac if 20 to 100hz? during my 30 sec would that be my best bet for the first time i get metered? then i could see what sounded better and on the second round fix it up adequatly?

Find someone nearby with a meter and spend an afternoon and a twelve of beer trying 10 second long clips of different frequencies. Don't do sweeps or any crap, just 10 seconds long of a single frequency, probably 30hz to 75hz should be a good place to start for ya.

Seems like 35Hz to 37Hz is the most popular frequency range from my own experience...but then, im not very experienced since i have never been to an actual competition. Planning to go to the next one in Brantford for sure tho. I live in the Aylmer, Ontario area, and my wife is extremely picky about me driving long distances to play with my stereo so i get a hard time even when i talk about going to Brantford, but this time im goin for sure. People should host some competitions or shows around my area! lol
I'd be more than happy to if i had tonnes of money to blow, any resources at all, some help, and at least a meter to test with. lol
Biggest thing i host is local LAN parties for PC/console gaming.

if you have no access to a meter, the when your at the comp, play a sweep from the db drag cd(if you dont have it, someone there will) sweep around 30-70 hz, ask someone to watch your score and tell you what your highest score was at what frequency, then on your next run, play just that frequency that was your highest. should be the best results if you cant get access to a meter before hand.
and BLU3Fi5H, 35-37hz is usually a daily driving frequncy, SPL setups are usually(not always) tuned higher. for instance, mine peaks at 73hz.
but ur best bet is to try to find a meter before hand, and if you cant, then try a sweep, then just ur peak freequency. good luck

Thats pretty good advice Mat. If anyone from here is going to the next comp in Brantford and wouldnt mind givin me a hand with that, that would be sweet! I will be the guy in the hideous looking Plymouth Breeze with big holes in the quarter panels, rusted out hood and rusted trunk. lol
Im really just looking forward to meeting some of the people at these comps. I believe a few of my friends are coming out too, but i cant speak for them.
