actually duke i want to do both, strenth the front plus recess the sub, is that not a good ides?? maybe i will hold back on the edges.

Why not buy a prefab and increase its bracing. There are many prefabs on the market that have 1 " front. They are carpeted and ready to go. Just add some better bracing and your done.

If your building a sealed box, most prefabs should fit within your given box volume.
