What would the effects be of using a subwoofer without the dustcap.

There would be less moving mass but how would things change performance wise?
What if you were running two identical subs and only one had a dustcap?

Once and a while you see some for sale and I was just curious.

 

Sup dude!!!...cant completely answer ur question but i used to run two 12" jensens without the dust caps...actually it help keep the voicecoils cool. Never noticed anything negative sitting in the front seat, but when i put my head close to the sub i could hear a bit of voice coming from the sub, not sure why but i could hear some kind of sound. So from my experience it doesnt hurt the sub, just cosmetically...By the way these jensens hit 138.5db in the back of my shadow.

Seriously? If i had a digi cam i could take pictures of mine... picture a sub with a hole maybe an inche or so in diameter, with a mesh grill down inside it. thats what mine look like anyway.

 

Dustcaps on subs are to facilitate cooling.

 

no I am pretty sure they are to keep debris out of the gap. I have had dustcaps fly off my woofers during SPL competitions and it made no differance at all whether they were on or off as far as SPL was concearned

 

they also do facilitate cooling, as already mentioned.
