Sub configuration suggestion
Sub configuration suggestion
Hi all... been gone a while!! Got lost in work and then I discovered a passion for speed mods over stereos ACCKKKK!!! So to those of you i recognize and remember from a few years ago... Hey!!
Anyhow I'm looking for suggestions for a sub configuration for my corvette. It's a C5 Z06 with the coupe body style, not the hatch back. I have the area on the trunk sealed off from the rest of the car and I would like to keep the space free. There is a parcel shelf behind the seats to the trunk divider that will easily accommodate a decent sub/amp rack arrangement and this is where I would like the enclosure to be.
Equipment:
Pioneer MVH-8200BT mechless h/u integrated into the stock vette bose sound system. I will be keeping this arrangement.
I will be powering the sub with one of my old school ZED crunch SHC 50s... Bench ratings are ~670 RMS into a bridged 1 ohm load @ 12V.
I don't want a sub arrangement that will weigh 200 pounds... just something that will match well with whats there and give some good quality bass. I've been torn between a single 8", pair of 10s... not sure really. Anyone with experience and suggestions on a nice sounding set up? Its a pretty small cabin with the trunk sealed off so i'm more concerned with matching the arrangement to the interior space of the vehicle and the rest of the stock equipment.
Cheers all!
Tony

Go with multiples if they're not too heavy for u. Alpine typeR work well in small boxes (save a little weight) and you've got decent power to run them. They sound pretty good too. Since they're gonna be in the cabin, right behind you, a single would probably be good. But if it's not enough, there's no easy way of adding if it's been custom installed.
Listen to anything at local shops that you can and see what fits the bill as far as weight, size of box, power handling, and sound quality. I suggested the typeR because I've used them successfully and I think they fit all the above criteria. Their shallow subs work really well in tiny boxes too.
I'm not familiar with the interior setup of your ride, but the Alpines should fit just about anywhere.

A couple of 8s would prob work pretty well for u too. Alpine did bring out an 8" typeR this year. How much room (dimensions) is available for your box? Not including the space you wanna keep for the amp rack. This could have an impact on what u run. A couple 8s in a proper sized box will outperform two 10s in a small box. Not that this is a big deal with the typeRs as they only call for a small box.
Measure the space you have and that will let you make a better choice of woofer. In the past year I changed from 4 8" to 3 10" to a single 8" and enjoyed all of them. I can still get my rear view mirror to move out of position with a single 8" on 300watts so you may not need as much cone as you think.
I would be looking hard at a single 10 in your car.

thanks Dukk... thats kind of the perspective I'm looking for. Don't want too much or too little.
I'm liking the single 10 approach as well at the moment. I found 3 8"-JLW6 for sale locally that I can have for $220 which would also put a 1 ohm load on my amp but I'm unsure that this is really a decent price for 3 used 8" subs. For $220 a single 10" new would be nice

It really depends on how much space you have or are willing to give up. 3 8s would be kinda cool but you need the space and the real estate for them too. You can get near the same performance out of the single 10 in less space.
