Subs... Power vs. Quantity

Question I've been curious about...

What would be the difference between running a single 10" with (for example) a 1,000 watts of amp power vs. running 2 10's running a total of 500 watts?

I'm not sure which direction I really want to go yet....

Thanks in advance!!!

More come area (bigger or more subs) = more air being moved = louder BUT an extra 10" sub will not make up for 500 watts

maybe a 10" sub w/1K W will be equal to 2 10" subs w/8-900 W

That being said i assume the same subs being used in similar box in the same car.

I suppose I should have clarified a little better.

I'm considering going up a fair amount in power but going back to a single sub. This would involve a new sub in comparison to the 2 I have currently so... same car, NEW subs

I have 2-10's with 500-600 RMS running to them but considering going up to around 850-1,000 with a single 10" driver.

Would I be maintaining the current bass I have now? Just wondering...

well, in "theory".....you get a 3 db increase from either doubling the power or doubling the cone area.

....but that assumes you are using the same sub(s).

Depends on if you are using the same equipment. My single 10" people claim it sounds like three 12's or two 15's and are usually blown away when they find out it's just a single 10.

I will be upgrading my 10" to a sub that can handle 1000 RMS. Currently the subs I have are only rated @ 250 ea.

Hence the question...

Thanks everyone so far. It seems to me that if you double the power and get the right sub, it should be just as loud as a minimum.

From what ive understood 2 10's that can handle 500W RMS each as opposed to one that can handle 1000W RMS will be louder due to the fact that the cone area is larger with 2 subs than one and they move more air. Not completely sure though.

Sorry but the question is... will 2-10's handling a total of 250 rms each be the same as 1 handling 1000?

I would keep your two subs, and put 1000 watts to em.
