I've heard good things about IDMax. I looked at them many years ago. I'm actually a bit surprised that the 10" needs a small box.

Specifically what I'm working with:
- 10" Subwoofer (12" will most likely run into fitment issues)
- I have a 1000W RMS amp @ 2 ohm
- Small sealed enclosure (MAX 0.7cuft)
- Maximum mounting depth of the speaker is 8.7" (ie. Alpine Type-X fits) but something 7.7" would be much better so the speaker doesn't stick out as much.
- More on the SQ side. But I still want to feel the vibrations. (Going from two 12's, I'm not sure what one 10" can do or what to expect.)

well i'm sure you know that one 10 displaces about 1/3 the air or 2 12's all other things being equal..the subs aren't really equal though. The Alpine or Fi or ID etc...are all high excursion, high output subs that displace more air than typical 10's...so 1 of them is probably equal to 1 of the 12's you had. So essentially you can expect 3-5 Db's lower output overall, still loud enough for music and to be heard when cranked by folks in the area, but definitely not the same level as your previous set up.

i've owned type X and currently run ID Max. The ID Max is an unbelievable all round sub. there is nothing it doesn't do well. extremely efficient, accurate, and still gets real loud.
i'd recommend both if the price is right, but absolutely the ID Max should be considered.

(i'm talking v.3, if you looked at them a long time ago it may have been v.2)

....regardless of the sub though, you are going to have a big dip in output most likely going from two 12's to one ten in a box that small.

Thanks for the input. I'm expecting a big drop in output. I can't do much about that. My choice is big sound or lots of trunk space and this time I'm choosing to be more practical.

Sundown SA-8 small ported box @ .6
Would probably be a good fit too

No way am I wasting the space for ported box. I've had two 12" Infinity Kappa subs in my old car using a sealed box which took up half my trunk. They sounded good. Definitely shook the car more than I needed.

It doesn't NEED a small sealed box as in you can port it, you said it needed a small sealed box unless you meant the Alpine. You can do better than a type-R for SQ. Ported 8" sounds nice but what 8" handles 1k? What size box were the kappa's in? 1.5 cubes should be even smaller. Build it into a corner if you don't want to take up half the trunk. You could even fiberglass some sealed 8's in the doors (4 8" = 201 cone area vs 10" = 78.5, 2 12" = 226) if you want space.

ID MAX 10 - look at this ported vs sealed graph.

Why would the 8 need to be pushed with 1k?
Run the amp at 4ohm make 500watts call it a day.
It'll just as loud as a 10 sealed, if not louder.
And it'll still get down to play the low stuff.

Lord Huggington 03-17-2010 06:30 PM

... because it's an 8? He's worried about output. I would be if I were using an 8 on 500w. I still say fiberglass/seal an 8" in each door.

Thanks everyone for your input!

The FI Q subwoofer specs were just posted and I'm going to be ordering that as my sub. Should be a nice sounding sub.

would you recommend that amp over mtx
