haunz scares me with what he says sometimes. it seems that a pattern forming here is the the people that buy online do it because they feel that they are informed enough to make educated decisions on their own, they seem to think this because they have been mistreated in retail outlets, does that make the salespeople the problem or the products? if the future of car audio is diy'ers, im truly frightened at our future, as alot diy'ers are a hazard with a set of crimpers

I can see why some of the professionals have a hate on for the internet/"basement" companies......and there is a whole different set of problems that arise from people buying online.

Your kidding right. I know of 3 DIY'ers that could out install a pro. Just because you are a DIY'er does not mean your an idiot. Yes I do agree that some do not know what they are doing. But remember the term you never know or learn till you try. Hands on, reading, and just plain old asking questions will teach you the information you need to get by. Not everyone has $100/hour to drop on a install. And I personally think its awsome that younger people are getting into the scene with limited money but all the time in the world to learn. OK so ya we make mistakes. But for every mistake made a lesson is learned. And I know a couple of guys that learned on there own and became huge people in the car audio industry. With out the DIY'ers this hobby would not be what it is today.

Hey I know that I have installed about 5 or 6 stereos and I know that I really suck at it. But from my first one to my last one I have learned a lot, and come a long long way.
I know that a pro would make my system look better, sound better and all that but I really don't have the money to pay for one. Especially since I change cars so frequently.
Also, I have yet to start anything on fire or melt anything with an instal I have done lol, the worst thing I've done is blow some fuses.
I feel that I am getting better and better with it, so that is why I do my own installs.
Thanks,
Craig G

Smartass has a very large learning curve ahead of him in his new venture. Dukk said it best. When your DIY guys start to cost you money instead of making you money, you will have a different attitude towards them. In my almost 19 years in retail, I have seen less than 10 guys that I would allow to DIY, the rest of them are a hazard with tools. This equates to less than .0005% of my customers over the years.

^^^ Agreed.
Smartass - also note the comment about DIYers was MOST not ALL.
I agree with MR2NR. I am a DIYer. I have not screwed anything up in the last 8 years, yet still I am a greater risk than a pro. I am the type of person who errs on the side of caution. If I am not sure, I post here, or ask etc.
Many DIYers (many, not ALL) throw caution to the wind and don't ask questions when they don't know. They assume the install is as easy as the plug and play set-up on their "home theater in a box" or their boxed computer system. These are the real dangers because they assume not much can go wrong, so they don't exercise caution.

As for the original post:
I don't believe it is a cult mentality, although some have purchased those brands because there is something elusive about them -
I am about to order a 9kV.2 from eD. Why? Great price, 3 year warranty, and it is a woofer that performs well in a small location. I am planning on doing a more complex install, fitting the woofer into a tight area that will likely require fibre-glass. My wife wants room in the car, I want a stereo, I need to figure out how to make that work. eD has a specialized product that works for my application, and doesn't cost to much.
Many of these "basement brand" are designed for a specific, small, target groups. Small target groups that larger companies wouldn't bother to go after - not because they don't care about them, but because the amount of profit they would get from such a small market wouldn't be worth it in the end.
I don't believe it is one is better than the other, but as mentioned before, apple or orange.

smartass, my point was that a diy'er goes to a reatil outlet and buys gear, installs it poorly, and blames the product, retail outlet or the salesperson for its performance, but will rarely take responsibility for the produccts performance. this is where diy'ers become more detrimental to car audio than they do benefit. they come on here and slam products and stores and so on when in reality(read real world) the problem is them and there inability to use products properly. now im all for people learning how to do car audio better, it helps keep my doors open, but like i said before most, not all diy'ers are hazardous and could probobly learn a bit by listening and applying the advice given by those who have real experience. i will give you 1 example, a customer comes in and bought a phoenix gold r12 12" woofer from me on boxing day, the guy says that he wants to build his own box because he doesnt have the $$$ to buy a good prefab or have me build one for him. so i design him a box give him all the dimensions even with how big to cut each panel for the box and give it to him on a printout, no questions right. he brings the oowfer back to me today and both tinsel leads are snapped, so i ask him if he built the box i had designed for him and he says no that he decided to build his own ported box, i say cusiously "cool lets have a look". so i venture out into the parking lot and look at the box he build. the box was massive. so i take the box size and port dimesions and and go back in the store and load the box parameters into the box program i have and the box is 3.4 cubic feet and tuned to 21 hz, and far cry from the 1.2 cubic ft box i designed. now lets examine th repercussions of this box. i now have to warranty this woofer, cost 20 in shipping, listen to the customer tell me that it never plays it loud and that i sold him a crappy woofer, cost, incalculable, and im sure he had told all his hommies that phoenix gold woofers ar bad, cost of that, undetermined. this is just 1 example of a probobly intelligent kid(diy'er) being incredibly unintelligent and balming me/the product for his failure, thsi happens far more than most diy'ers would ever care to admit. sorry for the rant but my staements about diy'ers needed to be clarified
