I just replaced the foam surround on one of my subs. Unfortunately I had to use a generic replacement and as such it did not fit as good as the original. I was careful to keep the alignment of the cone as straight as possible but when I push the cone in slighly I hear it rubbing a bit. I'm guessing that its the voice-coil touching the extended pole.

Is this going to be a problem?

Is there a possibility of sub "shorting out"?

I disagree, if the inner workings of the sub are making contact with something when you physically push it in, chances are that it is going to do the same thing when it is under load. Meaning, how long can something rub before it fails. It's better to have tried and failed than not have tried at all.

hmm.. your woofer will work. it MIGHT have a shorter life now though, but it should still do it's job. it might not sound good, as it may have coil noise??

if you push on most woofers you will hear a rubbing noise because its tricky to push the cone in with your hand and maintain the alignment in the gap,i would try hooking it up before you put it into the enclosure, and try running a low power signal and listen for any rubbing sounds. Thats what I was worried about... I guess I'm going to have to try again... Oh well...

every single sub that our team has ever owned or used for spl coils were touching the pole peice in the gap when you push them down. with many spl subs the coil scrapes against the gap walls when you drive the sub hard enough......nothing happens, the subs still work.

If the coil is rubbing then something is definatly wrong. If you messed up the allignment then your might be able to seperate the surround from the basket and adjust it. The other possibility is that the voice coil is FUBAR.

Iam with DW.. spl is one thing, but your SQ is going to be screwed and the possibility of shorting the coil and frying your amplifier is very real....

buy the correct re-cone kit and then you know the right parts will work.
