loudsubz, I was wondering the exact same thing. I was offered an 8W7 to compare it to, but that's somewhat of an apples and oranges affair. I'll see what else is out there to play against and let you guys know...
In fairness though, it has to compete against all other woofer options. Not just eights. I was dissapointed that it wasn't much tighter give the stereotype associated with small drivers. The Max Caliber 15-inch 151600 I tested way back was tighter. The only place where other similarly sized drivers would have shown off a potential drawback based on size was in the drivers inability to perform dynamically. I'll find another eight-inch to test that problem.
As for the LA Sound review not being online.. they don't put all of them online, that's why you need a subscription to the magazine...
I can't beleive I just said that...
I have been assimilated...

Thanks for the post, I enjoyed reading it. It's cool to see that the typical small driver stereotype doesn't always apply. Keeps us "know it alls" honest.
Your analogy of why it sounded the way it did was very insightfull, makes a guy think a little. I hope that more is to come on the small subwoofer front.

It was an LA Sound Cali Seris CA-12...
I was on their website at www.lasound.com, hey, my name is on there.. Imagine that!
Anyways, no sign of the CA-12 on their site... There is a press release, but that's it... sad!
Let me see what I can do about getting the review put up for you guys...

Dave, I wonder how it might sound against the RE 8? Those are two 8's that seem to be popular around here these days and often compared with each other.

Unless there is a sort of trade involved
It's all up to Dave, if he wants to try it out I'm sure I can arrange something

If I can add my humble opinion
Firstly - I am in no way defending the TB8 as I don't have to - I don't own one
Ok - I gotta admit I'm a little disappointed in the enclosure selection.. Tossing it into what appears to be an oversized sealed box of unknown volume does not seem to be aimed at optomizing performance Yeah Dave is doing this as a freebie 'what if' but it would be kinda nice to know what it could do if enclosed properly.
Personally I have never equated "oversized sealed box" with "dynamic ability". I would fully expect it to be sloppy, 'slow', and very ragged.
Not ragging on Dave or anything as I find his real reviews very thorough. I'd love to see a head to head between a TB8 and an RE8 though Maybe throw in a higher end 8 like an L7 8" to mix it up a bit
