Are there any C5 Corvette owners here?

I'm looking to redo the system in my 98 Corvette and was wondering if there are any other C5 owners on here who might be able to make some recommendations for me?

I want to go with a relatively simple and inexpensive setup, so my plan is to go with a decent 6.5" components set in the doors, and then a small sub in the back. I prefer tight bass, so I was looking at going with a single 8" or 10" sub. One of the things I was considering was the Infinity BASSLINK self amplified system. It's got a single 10" sub and doesn't need a big space to work well so I could tuck it in one of the three storage compartments in the back of the car.

If I went with that, then I could just go with a small 2 channel amp to drive the components. If I didn't get that self amplified sub, then I was considering just going with a single 4 channel amp which would power everything.

I'm not sure if I'm going to get the installation done by a friend of mine who did the last system for me (in a 95 Firebird Formula) or if I'd get it done professionally. I live pretty close to Selective Sound actually, I'm only about 2 or 3km up the road from them.

Any advice?

That setup sounds okay. i would go with a 10 inch tho. If I was you i would look into something like a JBL stealth box or a custom fiberglass encloser for the sub, that way you could maximize on space and it would look alot better than an mdf box.

The problem with the JL Audio stealthbox is that it's expensive! It's about $600 US, so you know that means it'll be about $1000 CDN. That's almost my entire budget! (I was hoping to do it for under $1500 total)

I'm sure I could do a single sub for much less than $1000.

I've instaled alot of stealth boxes and love the sound of each one. The thing I dont like about the stealthbox for the "vett'" is that you have to cut the factory carpet. The thing wont fit without trimming the bottom carpet in the storage compartment.
$600 isn't alot for that piece. Its all fiberglass and built amazing.Ive been to ther manufacturing facillity in Miramar Fla. and would recomend there products to anyone.

If I could find a used C5 stealth box that would be perfect, as I do believe it's an incredible piece, it's just too much $$$ for my budget.

I wonder if MTX does a ThunderForm for the Vette. BTW cool car bro. Sold my 76 a year ago and kick myself everyday :(

It's not too late to get another one, this time of year there are tons of bargains out there, since Vettes are hard to sell in the middle of winter.

Why not build one out of Fibreglass..

I bought the caraudiohelp dot com fibreglass DVD set - built my own fibreglass door pots and spare tire well and saved lots of money doing it..

All you need is a heated garage or wait till its warm out.. Search the forum and you will see lots of posts on doing this.

One of the guys from the Corvetteforum has offered to build me the enclosure (and install the entire system too) and he's got quite the nice setup in his Corvette too, so he knows what he's doing.

He has suggested I go with a single 12" sub, and he's going to build a good setup for that (not sure what he's got planned yet but when he gives me more details I'll let you guys know)

When I had my C5 I had considered many options. Due to money as you mentioned the JL was out. I did come accross a site called Sub thump.
http://www.subthump.com/vette.htm They seem to be able to get me a box built right for a fair amount of money shipped up here. You can chose between sizes ( 1-10, 2-10's and amount of airspace as well to fit what ever driver you wanted to install)
Hopefully this helps and good luck...
Now for me to figure what I am going to do with my C6...

So I ended up making my first two purchases this morning, I got the head unit, an Alpine CDE9873, from 2001 Audio/Video for $169. And Future Shop has a wicked sale on the Infinity Perfect 12.1 sub, for only $199 including a box (although we're not going to use it, so I'll just sell it to someone or give it to my 5 year old son and he can make a little fort out of it or something) :)

That sub alone is regular $399, so $199 is an awesome deal even though I didn't need the box. (I asked them if I could get a further discount on the $199 if I didn't want the box but they wouldn't do it)

So now I'm looking for good deals on an amp for the sub, as well as a 6.5" components set. The guy who is helping me build my system says the components will be just fine running off the power of the deck for now, he said not to waste my money on a second amp at this stage.

SLK1Z, how do you like your C6? I was originally planning on getting one in a year or two, but now that I'm doing up the system a little bit in this one, I figure it should keep me happy for a few more years, and then I can wait until the prices on used 2006s come down to the low 30s (when I do get a C6 it'll have to be 2006 or newer since I definitely want one with the 6 speed auto!)

for a sub that wont take up alot of room doesnt pioneer make a really shallow one i dunno how good it is but looks like it would work out for you that sounds like a sweet vett i was looking at a 76 i had the money for it buy you know 17 year old kid with some thing between his legs wont be cheap on insurence lol

Hey Patman.
Check this out on ebay. A used JL steath box for a C5
Item number: 220080757375
As for the C6, well I haven't had much time behind the wheel as I picked it up mid Oct and stored it early Nov. However, compared to my '03 Z06 this new one is just amazing.. I can't believe how it could be this good but man, by far the fastest car I have ever driven on the street.
When you get a chance to get one don't think twice! Make sure you do it right and go for the Z!.. :-)

I made another purchase today, I bought a pair of Infinity 6012i's. These are 6.5" two ways, they are on sale this week at Future Shop for $129.99 (regular $179.99)

Here is the link:

Does anyone here have these? How do you like them? I'm going to be powering them off the deck's power for now.

I think I've decided what amp to get, I'm going to wait for Future Shop to put the Fosgate P325.1 on sale (it's currently $349)

Here is that amp:

Patman 02-16-2007 01:10 PM

That Fosgate amp I mentioned above did go on sale at Future Shop for $100 off, but I ended up getting a much bigger amp at lunchtime today. I went with the Rockford Fosgate Punch P5002! It's spec sheet shows it is putting out over 650 watts RMS! So it's going to push that single Infiniti 12 quite nicely. :)

I also bought a pair of Alpine 6.5" SPS-17C2s for some rear fill also. Total expense so far has been $1177.54, so I'm still way under my $1500 budget.

So I'm now done with all the hardware, I just need to get cables, wiring, etc, and when it warms up my friend is going to build the enclosure for the sub and install everything. I can't wait! :smilie_da

I'm not sure how the cubby holes are in the convertible compared to my coupe, but in the coupe there are three storage bins in the rear of the hatch, a big one in the center and two smaller ones on the side. We're going to use the large center one to flush mount the sub. Then we'll probably hide the amp below that, or under one of the seats or something. That way I can still store my removable roof panel back there in the summer. (and summer can't come soon enough, I'm tired of this cold weather nonsense!) :)
