you know yuli you have a pretty uninformed opinion about somthing you have never tried,
and as for working my way to the top, i started as an installer.
ran a shop, worked as an installer, became an install manager, worked in sales, and am curantly
a store manager.
to truly understand and be able to start your own shop and be sucesfull you have to understand how all the hats work.
from pushing a broom to doing payroll.
i love my career and it pays me well,
but for the amount of times my installers call in sick on a busy day if i didnt know how to wear that had i would be screwd!!
like they say dont knock it un less youv'e tried it!!!!
and if you had never tried it dont preach to the choir!!

dude i dont do T-4's i sign pay checks. but what does any of that have to do with my question?
db i'd say i saw enough and asked enough to form an informed opinion. yes i also did sales at futureshop in the car audio section. didnt really like it b/c no one gave a damn about the customers as long as they spent the money. i really didnt like that so i left.
u say u are a store manager? from the way u described your road up the ladder it sounds like u work for futureshop or another 'big box' outlet. IF this is the case i would just like to inform u that being a store manager at such an outlet has nothing to do with car audio. So once again IF thats the case then your car audio career finished when u stopped being the install manager.
and just for the record, when i reffer to the 'industry' i do not mean installers, or store operators or store managers either. I reffer to the guys up top, the guys making the decisions and designing new and inovative products. If u are an installer or a bay manager please do not take offence to my statement but I PERSONALLY do not regard such positions as a 'career in the car audio industry'.

As for passion not getting you far in this industry... Passion is exactly what got me into the industry and got me working for a National Distributor! Passion shows. Interest shows. If you go in with no passion or interest then no matter what job it is, you won't enjoy it. I think that if you want to get into the industry and you are passionate and interested in it then you'll enjoy it and hang in... It's people that just come in and have read a few magazines or books and think that they are smarter and know more than the next guy when they don't even give them a chance. One thing I learned when I got into the industry is just listen. You will learn lots if you just listen. There are lots of people that have a huge amount of knowledge that are willing to share with people that honestly want to learn.
Funny thing I see here is that you're saying that working in car audio is SO BAD yet your own dream is to work in the industry? So does it suck for everyone but you? How does that work?
I work in the industry and absolutely love it. I got to go to my very first CES this last week and had an absolute blast. I felt like I was in heaven!!
car audio is not all shiits and gigle, just like any other industry its full of politics and bullshiit. and just like any other industry, the deeper u get the thicker shiit is. Car audio passion alone wont get u far in this industry.
My 'drea' job is to work on the spl side of things in the marketing department of a car audio company. (I like marketing alot) but I doubt that will even come close to being realized.

The car audio industry has been great to me! You do have to pay your dues, like any other job. Just remember you have to start at the bottom and work up. You have to push yourself to get better and make things happen. No one going to pay you 70,000 a year...unless you earn it! Cheers...

you could always go into business selling your own subwoofers. thanks to the wonders of the internet and the joys of build houses, you could, in theory, put together a lovely subwoofer with absolutely no knowledge of how they work and sell it to people the world over.
I just about sold my own subs. the start-up cost is relatively low since internet businesses don't need to maintain a retail storefront or an extensive number of employees, but you need to be savvy and know to promote yourself, identify your niche, and then you have to grow steadily because, honestly, the market is pretty much saturated right now and it comes down to brand preference because there are so many different drivers available. another disadvantage is being across a border from where most of your customers may be. duties, also, makes it difficult to price your product low enough to get good penetration pricing to try and usurp elemental designs in the budget performance segment, and then you run into resistance at all sorts of levels - people will always prefer to buy things from stores, from established customers, and even though your driver might performance like a W6v2 and is priced like a W0, it still might not sell.
running your own business is not easy. being an installer would be a blast, I wish I would have done something like that rather then going to SAIT. but in the long run, who knows? I hope I own my own shop someday...
