Thump! Amplifiers
#1
Hello Everyone,
My father just gave me his 97 Sunfire when he upgraded to an '04 Acura. He has a Kenwood KDC-215s deck in it, and I have a pair of 12" RF Punch XLC subs in a box from a few years back.
Now, all I am missing is an amp (and amp install kit, but I'll post on that later). I am a starving University student, so I am just looking for something that'll power these subs half-decently. Not looking to enter any competitions or blow anyone away, just want some good thump.
These Punch XLC's are rated @ 200RMS, and I was looking on ebay for a cheap amplifier that would put out close to that. I found a few, but then for ***** and giggles I checked XS Cargo (bargain store)'s online flyer, and they have a Thump!-brand (model TA-3001) 700w amp for $89. Now I did some looking on the 'net, and it seems the thing's RMS output is around 175wx2 to 190wx2 (@ 4ohms).
Can anyone give me some advise on this amp? I found a Profile CA640 (225wx2 RMS) on ebay for about $110USD shipped, so that's an option, but this cheaper Thump! might do the job.
I can't justify over $150, so I am hoping one of these bargain-priced amplifiers will give me some decent boom.
Thanks!

If I were you I would check the for sale forum here first, man...
Or post a wanted ad in that section, someone might have something a bit more 'decent' than those amps floating around.
Most of the people on there are reliable sellers, you wont have too many worries, and I am sure there are a few people in the Calgary area.
You might be surprised what you can find used for around that price point.

Seriously, if that amp you are looking at is $110 US and you think $150 is to much, $110 us is going to be almost more then $150 anyways.
For $200 you can get into a great little Kenwood, Sony, MTX, and maybe A Rockford........spend a little bit more and buy something that is going to last you.........

Tim,
I guess I wasn't clear - I was willing to pay the $110USD (that's including shipping from the US-based seller), but only if the unit was markedly better then the Thump! unit.
I am going to inquire as to XS Cargo's return policy, and if I can return the unit, I'll give it a go

Cheaper amplifiers skimp out on everything
Crappy crossovers with near horizontal slopes.
RMS rating which are usually based on 18vdc
Pathetic warranties
Greater THD - but you probably wouldn't hear that.
And the stuff they build it with is usually cheaped out on so it is more likely to break down - and since they are cutting corners they probably don't have the proper safety measures in place incase something does break down (IE lack of protection mode - inproper fusing or no fusing etc) - all of which can lead to a potential fire.
Yes, the amp will do, but you will be much better off going for a more trusted name. Stay away from Thump, Legacy, Pyramid etc.
Sony has good power for the $.
