my dad runs a chainsaw all day... ( I showed him the same magazine article earlier this year) I convinced him to wear earplugs (instead of just the ear muffs he'd been wearing)... my unlce has gone deaf since I was a kid... all I've ever heard him say is "WHAT'S THAT?"... and yes the upper frequencies are very responsible for a lot of the damage... as well as distortion... we have nothing to gain from poorly set gains...
