The Type-X blues!
#1
It has been a super long time since i have been around these parts. A bit of lurking here and there but thats it. Well alot as changed since then. I got rid of my peice truck and picked up a 98 nissan 200SX SE-R. First of all the car is awsome. I have done a bunch of stuff to it and for those interested i can post some pics later. But back to the task at hand....
I have finished installing my new system for the car. It consists of:
Pioneer DEX-P1R
Alpine Type-X 5.25 comps
Alpine Type-X 10"
JBL 180.2
JBL 1200.1
The comps sound fantastic and i have no complaints about them what so ever but the sub on the other hand is sub-par at best. I am not really sure what is wrong with it but truth be told it sounds like ***. It has good low end bass but it seems to bottom out on anything pre-100hz. Like it sounds real bad. I heard one before and it sounded fantastic which was the main reason for getting this sub.
The box is a box i made for it as per alpine specs. The manual says to make a box 12.5" x 12.5" x 11" measured externally giving it a gross volume of 0.65cuft and after sub displacement a net volume of 0.49cuft. So thats what i did. This seems really small to me but thats what alpine says is optimum and gave it a QTC of 0.84. I was thinking about 1cuft and thats what the alpine tech on the phone told me but i went with the printed numbers.
The sub is DVC 40hm and run parallel at 2ohm which should give it 1200WRMS from the JBL. It should take all the power i give it. But with the gains turned up only half way it seems like it doesn't like nothing. Could the box not be sealed right (remember i built it lol)? Could the box be to small? Dare i say to much power?
I really want this puppy to sound nice and i dont want to sell it but if i can't get it to sound good then i dont know what to do.
All the installation was done by myself and is proper. I have done many installs and have double and tripple checked everything. The box seems to be the only answer. What do you guys think?
PS DWVW if you read this PM me what it would cost for you to build me a perfect box (if you still are at FS) as i live in the hat.

For sure i do have enough room for vented. The site only says 1.5cuft so a box around 2cuft total would easily fit. I am hooked on a sealed box. I have never heard a sub on a vented box that didn't sound to "boomy" mind you i am sure they werent built right. I am just scared to switch.

I think that vented boxes, when done right, and when you have strong midbass up front, sound awesome. You get that extra bit of low end, and the vent does more of the work around the tuned frequency than the sub does. Not to mention you can get some decent output with less power. I have heard that the Type X's need a lot of power to move them, maybe yours still needs some time to get broken in, also.

Honestly I think the problem is in your Pioneer head unit. To solve this problem once and for all you should sell me that P1R for a good price.
OK it's not the HU but if you wanns sell it PM me!
Now as far as your sub problem this statement is a bit odd "It has good low end bass but it seems to bottom out on anything pre-100hz". Does it have good low end or does the sub bottom out? If it has good low end then increasing the enclosure size isn't needed. If anything increasing the enclosure size will make matters worse.
Sounds like the box is leaking to be honest. Check for leaks and plug them if found.
Do you have any crazy bass boost set on your settings that will make things sound icky?
Are the crossover/EQ settings correct?

are you sure that youve put the jumper in to hook up both voice coils
the typex 10" is a subwoofer and isnt a very good upper bass woofer, say 80 hz and up, the mass of the speaker begins to be detrimental to attack, unless you are running alot of power, even then the upper bass isnt as good as other speakers. the speaker you have is a very good deep bass woofer capable of a ton of output 50hz and under. your choice of speakers is good, perhaps your expectations are unrealistic. if good upper bass response is what you were looking for, get a new type r, the x isnt really designed for that

Hey D-50, I am no longer at FS, so I don't have access to a table saw at the moment. I could stil help you out though. I am leaving for work tonight and won't be back until Saturday. If you give me a shout then I could check everything out and we could figure out what would be best for you. I have a ported box in my Cabriolet and it is tight. You should have a listen to it before you write off ported boxes. Anyways my cell number is 928-3510 if you can wait till Saturday.

Hardwrkr: I know its not the P1 lol!! I love this headunit and i am not planning on selling it any time soon. Although anything is always for sale for the right price. So PM me an offer and we might work something out lol. As far as the settings are the eq is flat, no bass boost nothing. Just the x-over set at 80hz at a 12db/oct slope.
Defro: I heard that the woofer isn't really good for upper bass but this is not the way it should be sounding. It seems as though it sounds really well to a certain point and then just sounds terible. Its hard to describe really. It sounds like no subwoofer regardless should make this sound. The jumpers are set right for the coils to be in parellel so thats not it. What would you recomend for the best box for my application. Being 1200Wrms listen to rap/hiphop/metal/punk (yea i know quite the mix) Space really isn't much of an issue because either way i go i have about 3cubes to spare.
Dereck: I can wait till saturday for sure. I will call you sometime saturday after about noon if thats good. And dont worry i WILL be bringing the beers!
