Type X or Type R

I currently own a 12" Alpine type X and decided to ask some questions about the debate between the type x being no better than the half as expensive type r. What do you guys think?

they're two completely different subs. The type R is a go-loud kinda sub, the type x is made for SQ.

Type Rs are great bang for the buck, type X sounds ****ing amazing.

I got to admit my type x is pretty musical, haha it is very SQ oriented. So the type r has terrible sq, but higher spl?

i have heard some type r's get pretty loud, but yeah i gotta admit, they just dont sound that great doing it. Not that they are horrible or anything, just nothing compared to the type X. I would personally go with the type x.

Terrible?? I've owned both the R and X along with Jbl Gti's(my favourite), Id Q and Max, and a number of other subs over the years, and in my opinion the R is good sounding sub at a great price that can get very loud. It's a best buy as far as street price vs. performance as they can be bought online for 100.00 or less if you shop around. The pair i had were bought on ebay for 79.00 each (shipped with duty, taxes, and exchange at the time, it came to 243.00 cdn). I'm not sure how most of these R's are being set up, but mine sounded very good with all types of music using the alpine recommended enclosures (tried in both sealed and vented) and max rms power (1000 watts). What i got was clean, tight bass, and more than loud enough for music. To compare it with an X is really not very fair considering the technology and price point, and I didn't expect it to sound as good or get as loud as the x..which it didn't (1 sub to 1 sub). If you're looking for a good sub with lots of output and a reasonable price...it fills the bill.

I am not certain the R isn't the louder woofer, the newest R (last couple years with the accordion surround) is a pretty darn good sounding driver. Nobody (last 70 shows I have put on) has been using the X for spl competition... I don't know if it is opinion or fact that the R is better for SPL and X for SQ but I am guessing you could do either with both. Both seem to be well made with the X having a little more technology behind it

^^you've got a great point as I was comparing on music and rms input. If the R was pushed with a lot more power it may be louder than the X. I like the sub and would have no issues using them again, in fact I'm curious about the new version with the 2.6" coil, 600 rms, and shallower mounting.

Isnt the X twice the rms rating of the R? I dont have info to back it up, but im pretty sure the x has a higher xmax too. I have heard a direct comparison between the x and the r, but the systems were both very different so it is a bit hard to judge by the setups, but the x definitely sounded better.
Admittedly, he WAS running better equipment in general (better components, amps, even wiring).

I've had both swapped out in the same system using thier max rated rms power and the x was louder (1000watts vs 500 watts..no brainer there). SQ was good for the R, great for the X. With 2 R's and 1000 watts, they were way louder than the single X, and sounded better than the single R and even the X at very loud volumes (they didn't have to work as hard). Given the price, if you have the space 2 type R's will outperform a single X with the same rms power.
