using 2 alternators?

there is a few ways of running dual alternators.
-twin alts with internal regulators
-twin alts with shared external regulator.
if you are competing in db drag all equipment must share a common charging system with the vehicle.

ooo So does that mean if I install a second alternator, they must work together? Like, I can't hook up the stock one to the vehicle itself (motor, headlights, etc) and the second one just for the stereo? Even in Super Street?
