Oh man, that is terrible!.. Does this just happen at random? or is there usually some sort of human error attributed to these explosions?

We charged an old battery at work from a forklift we returned and we had the battery door open on the forklift when trying tostart it when it blew the one guy got acid allover himbut luckely it was so oldit only irritated his skin not burned him.

When jump starting hook up the good battery first and connect the negative line up last on the frame if possible. Sparks over the battery when it is gassing H^2 is explosive (I was a victim of this too, no fun).

That stuff stings, dilute with water and you will be fine (baking soda too if you are at home). Your cotton based clothing will get eaten up too.

Water? I thought sulphuric acid was comprised mostly of water. Further adding water could worsen the effects, no?

With water soluble, solutions (and even some non-water soluble solutions) water can remove some of the offending material. This is why poison warnings say things like ‘drink milk’, ‘flush eyes with water’ they want the toxic material to be diluted or buffered (milk) to limit the damage. Below is a little jingle that we used in an industrial facility to make fun of poor environmental techniques:

The solution to the pollution is dilution
